  1. I figured out that my line woes were more bite offs than break offs . Some of them were ahead of the head . I think they were swallowing the whole thing . Solved that with 50# braid through head allbrighted Just ahead of the baithead ton 25 # . Never had a break off from diver to lure . I use 30 or 40 big game we for that . I'm still not a fan of Flouro .
  2. You need 2 Green glow j plug Silver red head j plug Your choice of #3 or # 4 And I agree One flasher / fly
  3. Got to love that flourocarbon !
  4. If you can get one manual downrigger and mount it where you can deploy and get at it safely and easily it will be a big addition . Get a few J plugs and come up to LO 3 rd week in Sept to middle of Oct for shallow kings . There are a lot of nice flat mornings you can fish . Go to the Oak and bring bass tackle if it's rough . Two rods out , are all you need . I will apologize in advance for giving you your first taste of crack .
  5. I have the same riggers as those, for my 16 ft aluminum . I love to troll for staggers off the creekmouths . I use 10# herbies . Fish shapped . 8# would probably be ok down to say 50 ft . Fishing starts mid Sept for them . First light bite is best . I use #3 & #4 j plugs almost exclusively . White with black dots, glow green ,or silver red head are my go to. Look circulars and, fish under them 35 to 75 back .1 Ball set 10 ft off bottom 1 set half way down . I sometimes,in shallow set my rigger just under the surface maybe 2 ft down . Check the drags,on those as they dry up .
  6. Back from the ADKs and got out about 430 . Fished 70 to 90 East wind pulled cold water up to 44 at 35 ft . Tried with no hits . Pulled lines and headed to 220 . North troll . Getting ready to pull lines and call it and this hit a diver at 349 ft deep and ripped out 600 ft . I'll spare you the details of what it hit as to not offend anyone .
  7. And I admit I am one of them LO salmon last night , top of Scarface Mt This morning . Ain't life grand !
  8. And for those that need there, hand held These are the 2 flashers I have been using as of late Left is Binwadin Right Mr Jeremy Fisher Martha Stewart is in the boat but just like Binwadin Hand painted by brush or spray can . Go craft store sprinkles with clear coat . Sharpi for the dots .
  9. No , I'll say it on here . I have been fishing for these, fish since the first stocks . Back then we had to figure this fishery out for ourselves , because it was all new . You have been doing this 5 years ? Well rookie ,let me tell you what . It's,easy now . Back then , you had to know how to fish . The equipment And technology is far superior to what was . SeAsonal patterns are,all well documented . No internet back then to ask questions or find reports . You had to figure it out for yourself . Maybe you should do the same . So why do you need me to tell you what I'm getting them on And how ? I found something that is kind of new and unique that works for me and thats pretty gratifying . I made a lot of my own rods , New and innovative flies for steelhead that were killer , bass jigs that were killer , and on and on . I'm . Always trying to figure out the next best thing . I consider myself pretty good at it . I help guys, best I can And I got to here it from some guy with his panties in a wad that needs others to teach him how to fish .
  10. I posted exactly what to do with this last year . Kind of got some smack for it from a few on here . I'm still trying to perfect it . Will I sell some some day ? Maybe , but not in its, current state . I'm posting where and what . What else do you want ? Hard to get reports on here come Derby time cause guys are tight lipped . But I report exactly what happened , maybe to help someone out . Go Get an M/C rocket and accomplish the same thing . Put it in a glow or luminescent head and put it 54" behind an 11" white flasher of some sort 25 to 35 ft behind the ball and run it 2.1 to 2.5 . That enough info for you ?
  11. Afternoon run with the wife my last resort Derby partner for few hrs . A little choppy for her . Put out two flashers with my rigs . Went 2 for 5 1 king maybe 15 and a laker . Dropped what I know ( well maybe ) another king as he ripped out a bunch of line . Martha Stewart ( white ) 11" hotspot took all hits 65 down over 75 . This flasher has accounted for at least 75 hits since last mid July .
  12. Non meat rig I came up with last year that is about all I use lately . It's pretty simple . Have not put a fly down this year behind a flasher . It has only let me down twice this year but nothing works all the time . First light though it has been automatic . I am still trying to perfect it . But it works great .And I have confidence in it . Which I everything .
  13. First light Flasher down , 30 seconds later ,hit .. First 1.5 hrs , Flasher / GARY D rig was on fire. Boated 5 majors in that time . 11" Hot Spot in Martha Stewart and another I painted this week I will call Mr Jeremy Fisher both with glow heads . 45 to 65 down over 70 to 90 Heck of a current out there today .
  14. The urge for Mother Nature to keep the specie going is so strong , she will do what she has to . Even if conditions aren't perfect. King salmon were originally from the harsh environment of the Pacific ocean . They don't get to 30# in 3 years by being frail . We are 15 generations from the first stocks and IMO they are adapting the LO ecosystem . We already see some evidence of this from staging and timing of staging of spawning runs . I don't think some of you guys give mother nature enough credit .
  15. I have seen these fish spawning in drainage ditches . I feel it is not the bigger streams so much but the smaller . Such as Bald eagle , Maxwell ,etc . Those that have moving or estuary water that is close to the lake . The fish spawn from mid Oct to mid Dec . Eggs hatch 6 to 20 weeks . Cold enough to sustain them . Waters rise and floods come and flush some of the fry Into the lake . Not really so far fetched to think this maybe happening . At least on a small scale . Also as waters warm in spring , that in and out surge of tide like cool water that comes in May force them to stay in that water and suck them out into the lake Maybe it's up to 10 % of the 50 % of the Nat reproduction but it could be some . And there would be really no way to know if in fact this was happening . .
  16. Disagree. I think there is more Nat reproduction on the south shore than most think . Up to half of the returns are Nat reproduction . That's,a lot . Not all coming from the S almon and north shore IMO.
  17. And most fish from May to the end are caught from 40 to 90 ft down . Well within range of a standard size dipsey . Yup , there are times they are deeper . But that's worst case scenario on my end of the lake . For a guy wanting to get in the dipsy game , buy a spool 65# braid and a standard size dipsy . Don't need a special rod with a twilly . As long as you have a line counter and med action downrigger rod , you are in . Might not be the best but will work .
  18. I trust my knots . When I steelhead fly fish , I have up to 5 knots between me and a fish . On my rigger rods I have 20 # , then 150 ft of 30 or 40 # , then 20# Or 15# to my lure , and knot to swivel ,rarely breaks . But my wire did have a kink in it last year I did not see ( well maybe I did ) and when I went to pop the dipsy it broke and took 150 ft of wire ,my dipsy, a spinny and fly, and two swivels . Never had my braid break .
  19. I bought a 1000 ft spool of wire . I put 333 ft over my braid backing So when I get a kink and have to cut 150 ft off , I can replace 2 more times I don't put any more than 300 ft out on my dipsey rods,so only wire is in the water . I'm a cheapskate , so this is how I do it . I have one wire and three braid . I get fish on all . I always check my lines frequently because I am impatient . Also many times I find weeds or whatever on my line or the line / hook may not be right because I set it out wrong . Or a fish took a swipe At it and messed up the baithead .
  20. I've heard this doom and gloom on here before . And look at the last few years . Would not surprise me at all If things were not as good the next few years . Can't be stellar every year .
  21. This is why you need to be turning a lot going with against, sideways , and angles to the waves so you are at least going the correct speed some of the time . Buckets in and out of the water a lot till you dial it in . Yes there are crazy currents out there you have to deal with but it's not impossible without a probe . If you are marking fish and not hooking up . Most likely it's you speed . If you use proven lures . IMO it doesn't have to be exact . The only time SOG will help is if on the hit isay you are going with the waves and you note the speed . Going into the waves will be different , probably slower at the ball but faster boat speed . Note direction and SOG on the hit and duplicate it .
  22. Can you see your riggers on your fish finder ? Keep them in / below bait fish . I fished no fish hawk for years . With no speed make sure you are turning a lot and changing direction a lot . Don't be afraid to troll straight into the waves . Drag a bucket or two to slow down . See my post in tackle tech section . Generally speaking , slow down going with the waves , speed up going into it . Watch cable angle . I run 10# weights and have been forever so that's not your problem . . Have a rod with a spoon ready to check your speed boat side to at least check . A hand held GPS will be at least some references. Note direction of boat upon the hit My best rig as of late, has, been an 11" White flasher . 25 to 35 ft leads . Black / silver green glow or glow frog mags are my go to.
  23. I put my lowest in like 48 deg water and one 15 to 25 ft above on the other rigger . But lately I have been using all flashers for the the most part . I figure the active fish can feel or see them and have no problem moving up or down to hit them. Sometimes I Will stack 2 spoons on one rigger ( I have 2) , one 10 ft above & one 10 ft below the flasher on the other rigger . Then adjust from there . Temp can be overrated , especially from now on IMO.
