Braid to mono backing knot
garrymny replied to Dane Vanderheyden's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Albright is all I use for joining two lines of any kind. Never had it break. -
If it flips, I'm guessing the cold water will be on the surface. What's the basic game plan when that happens? Go offshore?? Trying to anticipate what to do. Sent from my moto z3 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I have problems getting staging Salmon to bite. I see thousands on my screen but no takers. I would come earlier if possible. Sent from my moto z3 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
Trolling Attractors
garrymny replied to Pulling Lines's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I usually run one of my downrigger balls with a Yakima Fish Flash connected to it. About six inches behind the ball. Then I will clip in a bare spoon on the downrigger release just above the ball. I use short leads when I do this, only 6 to 8 feet behind the ball. The idea is the attractor will draw them in, and they will hit the spoon. It really works. I usually put a carbon 14 spoon on this rig. I also run the attractors (Spin Doctors and paddles) inline like normal on dipseys and coppers and my other downrigger. I also like the plastic drag free attractors from Macks, in front of a spoon. https://www.mackslure.com/products/fishing-dodgers-flashers-attractors-trolling/?ref=87&name=flash-lite®-troll-|-4-blade-series -

The common adage to double what they say is pretty good. If they say 1 to 3 feet plan on 2 to 6. The only time you can be reasonably sure of a calm lake is if they say 1 foot or less, and that means winds of less than about 7 or 8 knots generally. 2 feet or less you will probably have 4 footers which is usually fishable depending on the boat, but will be a challenge setting lines. Why is there such a price variance on these posts. Boat US we have folks saying from $99 to $200 a year? Sent from my moto z3 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I'm learning that unless the NOAA forecast says one foot or less, expect a rough lake. 2 feet or less forecast is rough but probably fishable (depending on the boat). 1 to 3 feet is a crap shoot. Yes, double the forecast. 1 to 3 means 2 to Six. If there's a space or lull between the waves, ie "rollers", it's better. If the waves are closer, forget it. A closed bow deep V boat 18 foot or larger is pretty much required for all but 1 foot or less forecasts. Aluminum boats will be tossed around more than fiberglass. This is based on my 4 years of experience on lake Ontario and Erie, as I live close to both. Not an expert, but I believe this to be true. Sent from my moto z3 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

I don't have much luck releasing them. They float away. Unless you get them on a rigger (short line) im thinking most of them will die. Maybe if you drag them by the mouth you can reinvigorate them. Have not tried that yet. I need one of those gizmos. But also, they are almost always bleeding bad too. Sent from my moto z3 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

Fished 6am to 11. Got three nice Kings, 18, 20 and 22 lb. Lost three others. Straight out from smokestack. 150 to 200 FOW. Spoons and Spin doctors with flys. Ten color leadcore took one hit and lost it. Downrigger took 2. Slide diver at 150 back took one. 80 feet was good on downrigger. Fair amount of bait balls. One guy from Pittsburgh at dock had a 27 pounder. Said he was out at 420 FOW. 3 TO 5 FOOTERS when we came in. Lake was building through the morning. Went out to 380 FOW. Trolled around. No luck. No marks. No bait. Trolled into 330 to 288 and caught about 6 steelhead, a couple Shaker salmon, and lost a couple bigger Salmon. Not really hot but it was a good evening. Marked a little bait in 330 to 280 FOW. Took a few on a downrigger 45 down. One on a ten color leadcore. One on dipsey back 180. Temp was 75 surface and 45 degree 75 feet down. Fleas were a nuisance with braided lines. Time to put on monofilament for the riggers. No problem with copper, wire, or lead. Flies were biting really good. Sent from my moto z3 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Thanks sometimes I think I waste a good hour or more getting from 100 to 350. Of course we could hit fish at 200, but still think if they are offshore you have to be at least 300. I have been told by some they don't even drop a line until they cruise around and find bait. Sent from my moto z3 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I was wondering if successful anglers on here pull all the gear and motor at high speed to change locations. For example if you try shallow to no avail, and decide to go offshore, do you just troll North, or do you pull Gear and motor out? I usually just troll out or in, but it takes a long time.
