Niagara Fishing Show - Mark McClutchey Clinic
garrymny replied to NiagaraFishingShow's topic in Open Lake Discussion
How do I get a ticket, other than being one of the first to sign up at AA pro shop booth? Or is that the only way? I won't be there until Sunday. -
Ok, I ended up buying an iTroll. Hooked it up, but never got to try it.

I constructed a reusuable hoop system for covering my 22' boat this year. It's working great so far 1. Get 3/4 inch PVC conduit. 10 feet long. Get enough to make a hoop each 12 inches along the gunwales. 2. Get enough tees for each end of the hoop. 3. Make a section of PVC, to attach to each top of the gunwale with a tee every 12 inches. 4. Install the side pieces. 5. Install one end of the hoop PVC into a tee, and bend it in to a hoop, and insert the other end into the opposite tee 6 run a piece of PVC along the top of the hoops. Drill a hole through this piece, and each hoop, and install a tie wrap. This holds the 12 inch spacing. See pictures. Walleye fishing in the province of Quebec
garrymny replied to Andre wallyandre's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Father in law keeps talking about us going way up into Canada to fish for walleyes, something they have done a few times. But, seems a waste of time and previous vacation days to me. In two days this summer we caught 33 nice walleyes. On Erie. They were delicious. And, I got to enjoy using and learning to use my own boat, my own equipment. Why would I go 500 miles north, gorge myself on fish, and come home with 6 fish after burning up a week's vacation that I won't be able to use for deer hunting? We have plenty of fun right here on Erie and Ontario. But, to each his own. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
I have a similar story, but I trapped Fox, and Beaver. Then I went coon hunting at night! I got $50 for red fox, and up to $60 for Beaver. Coons were up to $35. My dad paid for Christmas for us 6 kids, by trapping mink and rats. He is 80 now, and is trapping a little this year, got 6 rats. Me, I haven't trapped for many years now, except for the coons and woodchcks in my yard.

Last Gasp Deer Hunt: PA Flintlock Muzzleloader
garrymny replied to garrymny's topic in Big / Small Game
yeah, they have a chart, it gets progressively later as you go west. As you know visibility can depend on many factors, cloud cover, snow cover, etc. Usually those factors weigh in similar to time of day. -
I'm sure by now you have it figured out, but my remington genesis shoots almost one hole groups with the hornady hollowpoints/sabots, and also the powerbelts. I use the magnum 777. two pellets. I use the 777 primers. When I am out of the magnum pellets I will go to the standard ones because with two magnum pellets, the ramrod is flush with muzzle, even when loaded. I believe the sabots type bullets help in some cases, for accuracy. But the powerbelts are full bore and shoot just as good in mine. I would definitely try those two, if you are still searching.

This year was my 41st year of deer hunting. I missed one year, back in 1985 when I joined the Air Force. Every other year I have hunted Pennsylvania deer (where I was raised) with my Dad, and my "people". For the last 15 years my best friend has come from Idaho to hunt with us. We hunt both PA and NY. I live near Buffalo. In NY, the only place we have to hunt is the Alabama Swamps. Very tough place to hunt. The cover is extremely thick, and plentiful. Deer numbers are only fair, not abundant, in my experienced opinion. We don't do real well in the swamps, but opportunities and sightings are frequent enough to keep it interesting....usually. Unless they become nocturnal, then forget it. This year, I got 2 doe in the swamp. No buck. In PA, my friend got a really nice 8 point the first day. My Dad, who is 80, was afraid to shoot the rifle this year. Last year he had a vertebrae in his neck replaced, and it did not heal. At his age, he opted not to have another operation. So, I loaded up some reduced loads for his Savage 99, in 250/3000. I told him there will be very little recoil. He missed a big doe, and said he didn't even notice the kick. This made him less afraid. So, a few days later, 3 doe came blazing across the field and he shot, once. I came out to the field, it was close to quitting time, getting darker, and he said he hit one, and saw it fall. We looked and looked. Could not find it. My buddy and I went back out with lights. Could not find it. Dad was very disappointed, and was saying his hunting days were over, he couldn't shoot anymore, the rifle with the reduced loads may not be enough to kill them etc. Next day was pouring rain. We took a long road trip with Dad, and he showed us the sites around Tidioute PA. Big circle. At 330, I went back out to his Deer Shanty. I looked out the window with the binos, and there, 75 yards out, was a dead deer. Perfect Lung shot. Complete pass through. We must have went past it at least once or twice. When I showed my Dad the picture of the deer, he was saddened we could not find it, but elated that he could still shoot, and the reduced loads would work. It was too warm to salvage the meat. The coyotes are now having a feast, Dad says, he heard them yipping out there. But, to return to the story, My Dad is the best rifle shot I have ever known, and I have known many. I have put countless deer out to him, and other unknown hunters have as well. Deer running full blast, loping, whatever. It almost ALWAYS ended up with a dead deer on the ground. He is truly one of a very few with this level of expertise. Anyways, on the last day, he was in the shanty, took one last look out the window, and a big doe was standing 40 yards away. He dropped it in its tracks. Needless to say, he was very happy, and now he is excited and can't wait for another season to come around. I told him I will be coming down to hunt Deer with the Flintlock in PA's late season, which opens day after Christmas. This is a fun hunt. Flintlock is an entirely different ball game than an inline or percussion rifle. I call them Flinch-locks. But, I was sad to see my season come to a close, as I absolutely love to hunt deer in the snow, my favorite way to hunt is called stillhunting, where you slowly creep along, stopping often. For ideal stillhunting conditions, that means snow, and lately that means Muzzleloading, if we are lucky. Plus I would like to take a Buck. So, my season is not over yet!

I would use a different Bullet. You need it to at least mushroom/expand. You may as well be using a FMJ. My Remington Genesis shoots virtual one hole groups at 100 yards with the Power-belts, and also shoots as good with the 45 cal hollowpoints in a sabot. Only shot one deer, and that was with the hollowpoint. It passed through. Deer went 20 yards.

Here are some pictures of a Fisher killed in down in PA. I was dabbling in taxidermy and it is the only full body animal I ever did. I would not be so quick to doubt that a Government agency would not introduce species into the area. From about 1997 to 2003 I hunted for Elk near Stanley Idaho with my best friend who lives out there. We did very well. In 5 years or so of hunting, we took 4 or 5 elk. No Guides. Public Land. The Clinton administration introduced wolves into the Sawtooths around Stanley. In a matter of years you could not find an elk. This explosion of wolves diminished the elk herds in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and almost completely eliminated the Yellowstone herds. Today, these states have very few cow permits if any, available to hunters. The only place I would even consider Elk hunting now is Colorado, which I did in 2012, and shot a Bull in his bed, in 8 inches of snow, one of my most memorable hunts. The Judges got involved, and the taking of wolves was banned far beyond what was "promised". Now there are THOUSANDS of wolves. There are lobbying forces, and agencies get these folks embedded in them that have some radical ideas. You get a group of people who want to push an agenda ( for example the 4 point rule for bucks in PA that destroyed the deer hunting- Dr Gary Alt, thank you). Now, maybe these fishers were introduced for the reasons stated, and maybe they naturally expanded their range into the area. But if these folks did introduce them, they never think about LOUC> Law of Unintended Consequences.

The Grady White I just bought has 4 thru Hull fittings that are below or even with the waterline. Two for wash down, and two for the live/wells. It was taking on 5 to 10 gallons every time we went fishing. I found it was the thru hull fittings leaking, the two on the left side.My worry now, after reading this, is that if they fail, or the hose fails, I would have a real emergency. Do I really meed them? Probably not. I could wash everything down into the belly and let it drain out the boat plug hole in the transom. Maybe I will insert plugs in all of them, eliminating the hoses. None of mine have check valves. 1982 Grady.

This is really sad, and odd. You never know when you will end up in the water. One day while motoring out I smelled a plastic burning smell. The trolling motor starter wire chaffed and shorted out. Not fused. Wires were burning. I got it out with fire extinguisher. Scary. Needless to say every wire now had a abfuse and I installed a master cut out to kill all power. But we Always wear life life jackets, even when it is flat calm and 80 degrees. You never know when the transomwill crack, you will hit a floating refrigerator or log or a fire will force you to jump in. Get the life jackets that have the co2 cartridge. They aren't too cumbersome. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Nice report, I enjoyed reading it. It's common I guess when you take young ones fishing, to get nervous when they aren't catching and they are losing interest. It is for me anyways. It's great when you have a good day, the fishing bug is planted. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I bought a kicker for my new boat, and unfortunately it does not have a charging system. It's a 2015 tohatsu 9.8. but, my boat has two deep cycle batteries that can be selected in parallel via a switch. I have trolled with my autopilot for 6 hours many times with no problems yet. I always charge both batteries the night before. Solar may be a good option, but so far not necessary. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
