  1. I have a 19 foot boat. I run a downrigger on each corner, a dispey rod on each side, and a 10 color leadcore. I run mine off a side planer board usually, but I have ran it down the center with no problem. Catch mostly steelhead and cohos on it, and it is one of my best producers. When I am tired or lazy, I don't put it out. Lots of line to reel in.
  2. I have 3 deep cycle batteries. 2 are connected in parallel and run the starters, fish finder, fish hawk, and down rigger. The other is connected to the auto pilot which runs constantly all day and is my biggest power requirement. I don't think downriggers are a big powrt consumer because of their infrequent use. I would put the motor starter on a separate battery, because you do not want to be without sufficient power for starting. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. 8/6. Olcott. 12 noon. I tried it. No Good. Went out about a mile. 3-5 footers. Went back to harbor. At the Launch there was a nice group from Ohio, cleaning their fish. They were coming in as I was leaving. They had good success, but they were out 12 miles. Farther than I would go with my boat in these conditions. They did say it was a little calmer past 100 FOW. Another wasted weekend! Maybe when I retire I will move to Florida. Lived there almost 8 years. Fished the Gulf of Mexico. Could usually get out. Didn't miss that many days.

  5. Olcott 8/6. I called off this morning because I didn't trust the forecast. Is anyone out this morning? How are the waves? I am thinking about going out after noon. Thanks. Garry
  6. I avoid the circus and try to find my own fish like Decoy hound said. Usually this means running farther, maybe a mile or so east or west of the glob of boats. Sometimes however another boat appears to be on a course that will intercept me so I have to make course corrections, and with the raymarine tiller autopilot it makes it easy now. I always try to remember if they have a 400 copper out, stay way far behind!
  7. Yes, I was hoping for Sunday afternoon, as it says it will be subsiding.......
  8. Thanks for the correction, for some reason, none of the stores seem to have an Egypt Spin Doctor or Paddle.
  9. what length do you use? I don't have the stud fly but i have some that I tied myself using stuff from Purple Taco. I have some blue ohee mirage, and some green mirage tied up. Have caught a few, but most luck has been on spoons. I use 23 inch leaders on flies, and 36 on spoons, if they are behind a paddle, or SD. Also having decent luck on a plain spoon, no paddle or SD at all, fished 6-8 feet behind the ball, which has two yakima spin flashers attached directly to it, daisy chained. Best spoon sunday was Moonshine atomic melon. It was bent all to hell every time, (thin metal I guess) and I straightened by hand best I could, and sent her back down, got 5 of our 6 fish on it.
  10. From Olcott we were in 488 FOW and the distance to harbor was 6.7 miles, per he GPS.
  11. I installed the St 1000 a couple months ago. It works beautifully. Cost $363 and that inlcuded shipping. Just have to fabricate a couple brackets. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  12. I found out that with 30# mono it is near impossible to jerk the line and release the dipsy latch. Too much stretch. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  13. Yes you have to calibrate it so they read the same, but it must be done in calm water, no wind no current, and I calibrate mine ( surface transducer and probe transducer) to read the same as GPS speed over ground. Again, must be done in dead calm so the GPS isn't jumping all over. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  14. I always fish in the morning, because of the afternoon storms that come up at times, and I don't like messing around in the dark to retrieve the boat and clean fish etc. But I know that wasn't what you asked, so I'll shut up.
  15. a guy at work said the ailwifes have some kind of enzyme that affects the steelhead.
  16. I noticed yesterday, 7/31, most of the fish we caught, Steelheads and one coho, all had lost some of their scales. And scales were coming off them as we handled them. I noticed the same thing last year. They look kind of ratty. Is this a disease, or do they molt like my chickens? Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. He'll get the hang of it. He's a great partner. Just he is over 70 and he has bad knees. Makes it harder for him. He knows now that he has got to get the net down into the water when I'm skidding the fish along the surface. Not sure why he's having trouble this year, last year he did fine. 18. Thanks guys. This morning 7 /30 I found the surface was 70 degrees right out of Port. I went to 100 for and trolled out 488 fow. Caught one Steelie at 400. Eventually turned South again and caught 4 more Steele's and one coho between 450 ,and 300. Seemed the water was pretty warm all the way out to about 400. 19. Got one steelhead today on the j plug. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  20. Today we used the clip for the first time. Worked great, head first. But my partner just needs to get the net into the water about halfway so I slide the fish in! Lost two today because he did not get the net into the water and the fish slid under. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  22. Started at 100 FOW Trolling north. Caught one SH in 400 FOW. At 488 fow turned east. Nothing more. Turned south heading to water tower. Started catching fish from 400 to 300. Got two man limit by 1130. One coho, 5 Steelheads. Nothing to right home about. 8 lb steel and a 8 lb coho were biggest. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  23. That's what I've been doing. Just wondered if there was a better idea. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  24. At the risk of being drummed off the forum, I don't know the details of the case, but what I thought about when I read the posted article is this: How many hunters plant food plots, turnips, clover, etc and hunt over them? They are timed to produce the feed at the hunting season usually, are they not? How many use lures, create mock scrapes? I have seen many of those aerosol cans "Buck Bombs" strewn through the woods. People don;t even have the decency to pick them up. How many go to Canada and hunt Bears over 55 gal drum? Is there a big difference between those things, and spreading some corn? What if he had planted some fields right beside the water? I have never hunted over bait, and I don't like the idea. I don't have any food plots, but I do hunt where the farmers have planted feed. In fact last year, I hunted the edge of a 50 acre standing corn field. As far as shooting the protected ducks, I wonder if Saiff shot them, or one of his trigger happy clients who are not familiar with identification shot them? Maybe he needs better control over his blind, or better education of his clients. Maybe there is mitigating elements to the case we are not aware of. This post is not meant to defend what happened, but to generate thought about baiting, versus food plots, etc. I do not know the man at all. Every time we go fishing, we are baiting our prey! LOL, that was a joke.
  25. Strategy for Olcott Sunday 7/30 We are going Sunday 7/30 waves permitting. Based on the temperature maps, and current map, see links, where should I go? How far? If you know how to interpret these, and you can help, I would appreciate it. Or, maybe these don't provide the information needed to make a decision as to a starting point. I went to the Salmon School, this year, and to be honest, I was hoping they would cover how to find the fish in more detail. I believe locating the fish is the biggest and most important aspect of success. Once you know how to set the lines, and what spread to put out, it is fairly routine. But although one Captain did discuss it, it was very brief relative to the amount of time spent on what lure to use, and what length of leader etc. It was a good course, glad I went, but they ran out of time and really breezed over the how to find them portion.LOCATION- or starting strategy for the next day would have been very valuable to the guys that get one weekend day a week, if that.
