You ever try pouring water into the bilge while it was on the trailer (with the plug in) and see if you can find where water comes out? might help narrow down the location.

Yet another question about sonar
FishingFool34 replied to dhhurlburt's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I used to run 10lb pancakes and was never able to mark the balls below 50ft... switched to 12lb torpedos and I'm good down to 90ft now. Same sonar unit for both setups. -

What brand riggers to you use? If you are running Cannons with auto-stop the braid will disable the auto stop. You need the conductive cable on cannons, once the cable breaks the surface it disconnects the circuit stopping the motor.

Yet another question about sonar
FishingFool34 replied to dhhurlburt's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
What size/shape rigger balls are you using? Heavier weights in torpedo shape will cutdown on blowback and could help bring the balls back into your sonar cone. -
I was out this am in Mexico. Few fleas about 1% of what it was like at this time last year. Last 4th of July I was pulling lines every 20 mins or fleas would build up so bad they would pop my rigger releases. All I saw today were clustered around my copper/backing knots and swivel knots. I’ll take that anyday compared to last year! on the other hand I caught fish last 4th of July... today I did not. Super slow, marked no bait and only a few fish.

Copper vs steel?
FishingFool34 replied to skinny420's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Well that is good to know, but I still don't think that it what he is talking about. I believe he has 1200' of 7 strand SS wire not weighted steel. -
Copper vs steel?
FishingFool34 replied to skinny420's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
If you're talking about the same steel wire you use for dipsey divers then it won't get you anywhere near the depths of copper. WEIGHTED steel on the other hand will get close to copper depths but I don't think that is what you have. -
If you already have WS backed with wire and it works well why would you want to use and unproven method of copper backed with wire? Why not just use 200ft WS and 300ft wire instead of a 500 copper? I believe 45# WS and #45 copper have similar sink rates but not quite exactly the same. So even if you did 400 of wire behind 200WS to compensate for that, it would still be a lighter and easier to handle than 500 copper.

I would avoid copper and planer boards until you had the basics down. The basics are riggers and braid dipsey divers imo. Copper can tricky to work with sometimes with its tendency to kink, not to mention a copper setup is only good for 1 specific depth. The two easiest to learn and most versatile techniques are downriggers and dipsey divers. Braid dipsey setups can easily pull double duty as flat lines in spring and allow you to fish pretty much anytime of year. -

Check craigslist near sodus for some used manual crank downriggers, you can pick up while you’re here. No need to wire your boat for electric riggers for just a single trip a year. Get yourself a couple dipsey divers and a couple reels with braid for them. I fished my first two years on the lake running just two riggers and two dipsey setups. Caught plenty of fish running just 4 lines. -

I haven't been out in almost 3 weeks now because of this (and hot walleye bite on Oneida Lake). Super slow since mid May for me basically. My last 2 times out have totaled 3/5 with only 1 salmon. Might give it a try Sunday, but I'm not super optimistic about it. Sounds like they are doing really well further west so hopefully those fish move this way soon! -
Down riggers and summer steelhead
FishingFool34 replied to steelfire's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Most of the steelheads I've caught in the summertime have been on sliders or short leadcores and any spoon with a good amount of orange in it. -
I have no experience with that unit specifically but I will say this... 3.5" screen is going to make it tough to see what's going on. I would suggest something with a slightly bigger screen, a Humminbird Helix 5 can be had for under $200 and will be much easier to read with a 30% larger screen. As far as marking your rigger balls, there are a few more factors other than your sonar. Mainly what size/style of ball you're using, I ran 10lb pancake weights my first year and could not see them below 50ish ft. Next year I upgraded to 12lb torpedo weights and I could see them down to 100ft, this was all with the same sonar unit. Any decent sonar will mark your rigger balls as long as they are in the transducer cone.

Oneida Lake Marina Recommendations
FishingFool34 replied to Todd in NY's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I launch from Godfrey Point usually. Nice state launch right in the middle of the lake on the north side. It's right before the town of Cleveland on rt 49, decent little bait shop a mile down the road. Huge parking lot, it's usually never crowded during the week either and a big plus is it is FREE to launch there. Very good walleye fishing close to the launch as well. Shoot me a pm next time you go and I'll give you the details on the fishing. -

I'm sure they have big plans for the area. They bought Marion manor 2yrs ago now, tore the main building down within the first month but left the ramp, docks and large storage shed. They are in the process of replacing the main section of docks and fuel pumps now. They must have something in mind there and with all the land near the marinas they bought as well. Only time will tell I guess, in the meantime walleye fishing is on fire right now. I usually get out there once or twice during the week, I only live 15 mins from the lake. -

Yes they own Snug Harbor, Mariner's Landing and what's left of Marion Manor.
