  1. Awesome that's what I wanted to know, gonna order a set and give them a try Thanks!
  2. South east wind as bad for fishing as a straight east wind?
  3. Yeah that's odd... weather channel calling for 10+ knot wind all day starting at 7am but wave forecast says 1ft or less?
  4. That's kind of what I was thinking you would have to do to use it without a downrigger. Now you basically are using a fishing rod as a downrigger of sorts without the advantages of actually having a downrigger. Definitely seems like it was designed more with the portability aspect in mind than a performance improvement or existing upgrade. Imagine the blowback on that 1lb ball at 100ft down trolling at 2.5mph lol
  5. They are still out there but no where near as bad as they were a couple weeks ago. Went from checking/cleaning rods every 10-15 mins to once maybe twice and hour now.
  6. I have a Okuma Coldwater 303 linecounter reel I would like to trade for a larger 55 size reel. I can add cash if need be, let me know what you have.
  7. Yeah I did a quick search and read about them but I couldn't seem to find any info on ppl using them on the larger boards. Like I said with the added pull of them big boards + copper line I just wanted to know if the releases can handle it. I really don't want them tripping and swinging in over all my other lines, I see terrible tangles in my future.
  8. Anybody use these on inline planer boards? I have a pair of Offshore SST Mag boards and had a big salmon sink one and keep going. I let up on the drag trying to get the board to resurface but unfortunately the copper line broke and I lost 300ft of copper, a big paddle and meat rig... about $60 in gear gone. I was thinking these releases might help remove the weight/pull of the board when fighting fish. My biggest concern is if the tension can be adjusted enough so the release won't pop under tension from 300ft+ of copper + a big board + waves, but still go once a fish hits.
  9. I saw this a couple weeks ago and was a little confused by it myself. Ok no need for mounting a transducer on the boat, yeah that's nice and less wiring to run but I have transom boards on both sides of my boat so mounting a ducer isn't really a big deal. Use without downriggers? It looks like the same X4/D probe which is far from small and not something you're gonna run on a rod that you will be fishing with. How do you get it down to the depths you want at our trolling speeds and keep it there? Maybe I don't completely understand it yet, but it seems to me it was designed for smaller boats or to be a more "portable" unit.
  10. I might have to switch back to MC rockets, I went through 10 baits Saturday and that's me just running 6 lines. I'm sure you guys on bigger boats running more lines easily use that much if not more in a day. Any place I can save a few bucks makes a difference, especially when it's already a 3hr round trip just to get to the lake.
  11. I was just north of the plant yesterday and fleas were 10x better than they were last week. They are still out there but no where near as bad as they have been, deeper we went the less fleas we dealt with.
  12. Im looking into getting a real case (36 trays) of whole green label herring. Trays of 12 whole herring in the $8 range is something I can manage.
  13. Stopped at fat Nancy’s today to pick up some cut bait... wow! $13 a tray! And when I say tray I mean 6 strips! Not 6 fish... 6 strips aka 3 fish! Been a while since I bought meat but I don’t remember paying $4 per fish!
  14. While I do agree that wire setups really benefit from a higher end reel. I have to say when I first started I ran Okuma Magdas with Tuna Tom CF drags for 2yrs as my wire reels and they never gave me a problem and landed a good number of fish ($50 reel + $8 drags). I now run Okuma Coldwaters for my wire reels ($90-$100), if $200 reels aren't in your budget you can still have very usable setups running some lower end reels imo.
  15. This is the chart I use... 1,2,3 = Dipsey Setting, W=Wire, B=Braid, M=Magnum Size, D=Dipsey Size 1
  16. My biggest issue when I did mine last spring was finding a place to do it. I ended up taking everything I needed with me to a boat launch, launching the boat and replacing the bunks in the parking lot! I only have 2 bunks and took a good hour to do each one.
  17. I'm assuming your bunks are carpeted and you're measuring them with the carpet still on them. Most likely they are a standard 2x6x10. Pressure treated is fine, depending on the condition of the carpet you can remove it from the old ones and re-use it (just stapled on). You are prolly going to want new hardware though, go with stainless steel and you should be good.
  18. Need 2 more Linecounters please....
  19. Working properly and being accurate are two different things... yeah they will function fine with just 1000ft of wire on them. BUT will 100 on the counter really equal 100ft of wire out? Answer is probably not (depending on reel). If you're doing two reels here is what you do to be sure.... Spool 1000ft of wire onto reel #1 (tape the wire to the spool it's just temporary) Add 300ft of 30lb mono on top of the wire Measure out 100ft in your lawn Walk off the 100ft and check your counter If your counter reads 100 at the 100ft mark attach the mono to the spool of reel #2 with arbor knot and wind everything off reel #1 onto reel #2. If your counter is off, add or subtract mono until your counter reads 100 at the 100ft mark, note the amount of line you added/subtracted. Reel #1 onto reel #2. Add that same amount of mono to reel #1 and put your 1000ft of wire on top and you have 2 reels that are dead nuts on.
  20. You know you can use just about anything to connect these? its just a 12v connection, as long as you use the right gauge wire for the riggers you will be fine. My old Mag 10a that came with my boat were wired with Minn Kota trolling motor flush mount plugs and sockets on them. No reason you couldn't use something like this and wire it yourself, these are only rated for 3amps and I'm not sure if these exact ones will work but you get the idea. https://www.wholesalemarine.com/polarized-cable-outlet.html These are what my old ones came with https://www.cabelas.com/product/MINN-KOTA-MKR-V-PLUG-RECEPTICL/1646824.uts?productVariantId=3310004&WT.tsrc=PPC&WT.mc_id=GoogleProductAds&WT.z_mc_id1=03562403&rid=20&ds_rl=1252079&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIsvDwgtiU3AIVWoGzCh32owhyEAQYAyABEgJQK_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
  21. Appreciate the info, I will take off the "blinders" and give this a try! I'm only 2yrs into the salmon game so I'm still learning.
  22. When it comes to dipseys I won't run anything less than 30lb... I used to run 20lb and had to may break offs at $25+ a pop. You could prolly get away with 20lb on riggers, but it's easier to keep everything the same imo. Fish have no problems hitting FF rigs and most flies are tied with 50lb flouro.
  23. Bought a fish hawk this year to help me keep my lines in the correct temp zone... having my worst year ever fishing strictly "correct" temp. .I headed out deeper on sat and saw my temp 50ft down go from 55* to 49* so I turned around and went back in shallower only to fish 6hrs for 2 bites and lose both. Not to mention 3+hrs of drive/tow time.
  24. I use small spro swivels, I can't remember the size but they are small enough to be reeled on to the spool. I usually run 30lb flouro for leaders also.
  25. Well makes me feel better that I'm not the only one that made that same mistake... I literally did the exact same thing Friday and fished with BR line Sat. It was just as bad, I've heard people having better luck with 40lb Big Game, I coulda done that for half the price of the BR. I was having to clean my riggers every 20 mins and wire every half hour. I think I had all lines in the water for maybe 15 mins out of every hour, sure takes alot of the fun out of it! Even worse when you mark a fish right where the line you're cleaning was supposed to be!
