Bad impeller? Ran the kicker yesterday for about 4 hours with no problems (4hp Johnson 4 stroke). I know it was spitting water out the couple times I went back to adjust the speed. Then I noticed white smoke coming out the side of the engine and ran back and shut it down quick. It must have gotten very hot and actually melted the sight glass on the oil reservoir (the "sight glass" is a plastic lens), it was spitting oil and smoke out of that hole after the lens melted out. I didn't look to see if it was spitting water at the time, I just shut it down as soon as I noticed the white smoke. I can't start it back up and check until I fix the sight glass and put oil in it. It was still running when I shut it down so I'm hoping I caught it before disaster struck. Did the impeller go bad and cause it to get that hot?

Oswego Fishing

That's usually what it turns into, but temp is a good area to start and work from there. -

Oswego Fishing Heading out of Oswego tomorrow am, first time out for salmon this year. How's the fishing been? Any recommendations on where to start depth-wise? My New fish hawk hasn't come in yet so I'll be fishing "blind" as far as temp goes. -
Already have it set to install on port side to offset weight of driver and batteries. Easiest way to do it anyway, with all cables and wiring running to starboard side from the main engine.

Wanted WTB - CANNON DUAL ROD HOLDERS
FishingFool34 replied to CSH Kucinski's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
FYI... this is the part you need to attach the dual rod holders to the rear. The same dual rod holder that goes on the front works on the back too. There is no difference, only the post is needed to attach them to the rear. https://www.fish307.com/cannon-downrigger-part-2411386-post-rear-mount-lexan/ -
forgot to mention, installing on a 18ft Alumacraft with a 150 merc outboard.

Transom Kicker Install Anything I need to know about before installing my kicker on the transom? I measured and have plenty of room on the transom. Is it really as simple as hanging it on the transom and tightening the screws? Do I need to put something on the transom to avoid marking or denting it? Is there such a thing as too tight?

Well I picked up the 4hp 4-stroke, couldn't pass up the deal. I trolled with my 150 2-stroke for a long time so the vibration cant be any worse than that I would guess. I went the cheap route and ordered a panther aux steering kit, if it doesn't work I will have to look into an EZ steer setup. Anything else I need to know/do before I take it out for the first time?

What size kicker? Looking at a 6hp 2-stroke kicker (1970s) or a 4hp 4-stroke Johnson (early-mid 90s) for a kicker. The 4 stroke has an internal tank, is it possible to hook it up to my main tank? I guess more importantly will a 4hp be enough for my boat? I have a 175 Alumacraft, tournament pro (See attached picture) I don't fish big water often and would only be interested in getting it for trolling (I mainly fish Oneida Lake). My 80lb terrova pushes my boat to 3mph maxed out for reference.

40% off all fishing tackle at gander now, they still have a lot of salmon gear left (flashers, dispies, flies, etc) Terminal tackle has been picked pretty clean but still ok selection of hooks and decent selection of stickbaits and spoons left.

Copper line and Planer Boards
FishingFool34 replied to FishingFool34's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I'm still working on figuring out a decent spread from a smaller boat (18'). I wanted to find something I could run off planer boards that i could get away from my spread. I will be running 2 riggers (possibly stacked) along with 2 dipsies and then something on boards, I have 3 color LC i could run but was looking for something to get some spoons down a little deeper... maybe mono with snap weights? I have in-line boards and I'm not sure how to run them when fishing salmon as the ones I have don't release from the line (offshore OR12 boards), I worry they might break the line or cost me to lose the fish with a big run. Also running 2 dipsies on the same side of the boat also seems like a disaster waiting to happen so I would like to avoid that as well. -
If your talking about braid slipping when using inline boards there is a simple fix to that. Just double loop each clip and you won't have any issues with the boards slipping. Make sure the loop stays around the pad and doesn't slip into the groove behind and they will release just like normal. Been doing this for years running 10lb and 20lb braid on boards.

Copper line and Planer Boards
FishingFool34 replied to FishingFool34's topic in Tackle and Techniques
anyone ever run segmented copper? say 200' copper then a 10' of mono then an additional 100-300' of copper. This way if you wanted to run it on a board you could attach to the mono section or if you wanted to run full 300/500' copper you could do that as well?
