  2. I heard some bad things about the Panther 4 (not all bad, but enough) and was not willing to take the risk. The cheapest price I could find for the Powertran TAILFIN 8001 was $859.99 and for the iTroll it was $349.99. I paid the extra $90 for the Hunt mode upgrade on the iTroll. This software upgrade allows the iTroll to speed up and slow down in increments, incrments are user settable. You know how guys say they use "S" turns to slow down and speed up their inside and outside lures? This does the same thing automatically but in a straight line (no risk of tangled gear). it looks like the Powertran went up to $899: https://www.boatownersworld.com/powrtran-tailfin-kicker-steering-system.html
  3. Nice looking rig. I am waiting for this virus thing to pass so I can pick up my '86 Sportcraft Fisherman 250 hardtop. Looks very similar to yours. I am a newb but based on the recommendations on LOU, I bought a Honda 9.9hp from Outboards Online, a Powertran Tailfin and iTroll from Boat Owners World. Not cheap but less expensive than some other choices and more robust than cheaper options. No install yet or time on the water so we will see. Good luck.
  4. Thanks much, but truth be told...I caught this 24lber and about 12 more big salmon and 6 steelhead Aug 24, 2018 fishing on a charter with Legacy Rob. That day has changed my life. I have been a fisherman my whole life but never took advantage of one of the best fisheries in the nation right here in my "own backyard" (due to ignorance, not apathy). I will be picking up my Sportcraft 250 in 3 weeks from Rustyhook1971 after spending two years trying to turn an 18ft bowrider into a salmon fishing machine. Not so much. Since that day (actually two years prior) I have visited this site more or less on a daily basis in order to learn from a talented group of fishermen (and women). The 2020 Niagara salmon school was a big help along with the series by Dan Keating. Now it comes down to some serious sea time, putting it to use, taking notes, and the school of hard knocks. Tight lines to you this season!

  9. Good info guys! Many things to consider...
  10. I need to get a kicker this year as well and I am wondering why I don't hear anything about Yamaha being thrown into the mix. Thinking of 9.9 hi thrust with tilt. Any opinions or valuable information?

  12. Same question, really. (sorry about the hijack, Jbfish) I am picking up my 1986 Starcarft 250 Fisherman with original 5.0 MerCruiser from Rustyhook1971 in about a month. Not totally sure about engine condition but know that it runs. What I do know is that I can't get stuck 5-10 miles out on the lake or I will never hear the end of it from my wife. Questions: Should I get an e-start Yamaha 20hp kicker with long shaft (20") for trolling to make sure I can get back in, even in rough water? Will it troll slow enough without using bags? Is a 9.9hp really enough motor for this set-up (getting back in, not the trolling)? I plan on getting an autopilot with an Ez-Steer to main. Many thanks for any advice!

  16. Thanks Whaler! You are one of my favs. Friendly, level headed and always eager to welcome the new guys and congratulate people that have been successful. A true class act. I have been a daily lurker on this site for 3 years and took a charter with Legacy Rob in Aug 2019. I have been hooked ever since. I have been taking notes daily and now is the time to get get rid of the 18' open bow pleasure boat and get out onto the big water. Whaler, Legacy, Gambler, Frogger, Jeremy Goodison(!), HB2, Gill-T, Todd, rolmops, Vince, HarryBumCrack, NymphO, Gator, SilverFox, C3M, Lucky13, Chinoock35, Blue eye, fisherdude, bandrus1, Xxx, Fishnut, Yankee Troller, missdemeaner, and many others too numerous to mention have made a big difference in my learning endeavors and my day to day connection to the great fishery that we have. A special shout-out to Sk8man!! Very intelligent with a scientific engineering-type approach to all subject matters. You speak - I listen. Would love to meet you some time and chat. if you see a friend's name in this post, please let them know they have been recognized for their contribution to this site and the big lake trout-salmon fishery. Thanks to you all!
  17. Sorry, this boat was sold today. We are in the final negotiations this week. I visited Jim and the boat last fall and finally pulled the trigger this week. She's an old girl but a real looker. I am hoping the looks are not just skin deep. Jim, A.K.A rustyhook1971, has been a pleasure to work with.
