Summer fishing/camping trip with my boys: advice needed
Low Baller replied to hornet99's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I go to different areas in the Adirondacks every summer around the same time. Cranberry Lake is one of my favorites. Great bass and pike. Racquet river flow is awesome. Just about anywhere. Do some research, you won't be disappointed Sent from my SM-G900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
Wow, gotta think about this one! HB2, you handled the situation properly. No one is truly immune from threat, foreign or domestic. How we chose to defend ourselves is a right of the individual. Sometimes the best offense is a good defense. Educating yourself is the 1st step. Training is the second. Common sense and compassion are you're allies, but nothing is fool proof. Just a thought from a fat guy in a little boat. Being a life long fisherman from Pa, the lake O fishery and the finger lakes have always been cream of the crop imo. We're lucky to see a trout over 18" in our waterways with the exception of Erie. I'd love to no how much revenue I've put into the system in just the last 25 yrs just salmon and steelhead hunting in the Pulaski area. Point is, like many, I started with a spinning rod and a sponge. Didn't feel right, having a conscious I bought a 10 wt fly rod. Same conclusion. Spent too much money rigging a small craft for trolling. Practiced and educated myself through all meens. Became pretty successful based on what little time I get. I just know that it's all about quality and not quantity for me and the apprentices I take with me. 1 30lb king, or 10 lb rainbow, or 8lb walleye, or even a fat bluegill is worth the trip. It's about the trip, not the fish. You folks do a great job against the odds. There will always be conflict, but as long as I get to say, "Good job buddy, nice fish" I've done my job. Good stuff. My thinking was on the lines of clear water and over predation. I remember scooping smelt as a teenager then spending a day frying and canning. Just curious as to why they don't put forth the effort to reintroduce. Guess it's not worth the effort. Thanks for the info. Sent from my SM-G900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Can't help but follow along here. I realize this thread started as a stocking format but I'm curious. Why does it seem that smelt get limited attention as a source of prey. I'm uneducated here. Alot of the lakes I've fished seemed to have a substantial smelt population over alewife. I cut my teeth fishing the finger lakes and Adirondack lakes in the 70s. Rainbow smelt used to be pretty abundant. What am I missing? Sent from my SM-G900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Interesting read. As a weekend warrior from Pa my passion for Lake O's salmon and trout fishery started with a friend taking me to the river some 25 yrs ago. I was amazed to witness something that I've only read about or had seen in pictures. After a few yrs of caos, I moved to the lake in my small craft. Determined to figure it out. I tend to agree that the tribs need to be regulated better, but then I still fish late August through September as the stagers move in. Restricted to small craft and limited time. Should they regulate that too? Maybe. It's a double edge sword. I understand that most of the folks here make a living from this fishery, so there's always a conflict of interest. We all love to fish, and most of us try to be conscious of sustainability. Imo , I think that science has been doing a pretty good job but the almighty dollar will always win. Mother nature will have the final say. Have a wonderful holiday folks, thanks for the wealth of information you all provide. Sent from my SM-G900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Boxed out by noon. Went 6 for 8 with a couple of eater coho that I found at 75' on a big bait ball down 35. Heading home tomorrow morning. Stayed out from the pack, found some fresher fish but worked our butts off. Lost a rigger ball from a big buck trashing in the net. End result is that Tony is so beat he doesn't care if we go out again. Like that's ever gonna happen, lol. Thanks to all for making this Sept season another memorable one.
