I was using the Sam's releases also with my offshore inlines because I had power pro braid behind all my lead core and copper rigs. I found them to be a pain for me. The braid was more likely to tangle around the plastic bracket on the board when the release opened, or even fail to open at all especially if I was trying to pop it to bring the line in. I never liked attaching the Sam's release to the board with the split ring and letting it just dangle, I felt like that was a lot of my problem. Anyway, I spliced a 50 ft piece of 25lb mono in between my lead and braid on all my set ups so the inline board can be clipped on to the mono. Now I just use the standard front clip and it works great for me. Easier to deploy and bring back in. Plus the rear clip holds onto the mono better also and won't slide like it could on the braid. Kudos to Yamaha for replacing the lower unit for that customer. Hard for me to believe that's the norm. I wouldn't expect a manufacturer to make expensive repairs due to my negligence, but again very cool that Yamaha did it. Never really hear anything negative on their newer 4 strokes. I usually run my lighter gear up until I find myself targeting primarily salmon. Ran into a few of those physco kings over the weekend. It was a good "refresher" for proper drag setting, patience, and communication on the boat. Light rods, small leaders and terminal tackle..... what could possibly go wrong, lol. Since I already have a pair of wire dipsy rods/reels, I'm thinking of rigging up a pair of saltist 30's that I have laying around with braid for early season, shallow, (pre fleas) dipsy reels. I'd like this setup to be versatile for use on the finger lakes and possibly for chasing walleye also. Probably going with 40# power pro on the reels. Looking for suggestions on the rods. On my wire rigs I am using Okuma pro glt dipsy rods in the 9' length. Should I use those or is there a better rod for this application? I have a smaller boat so I tend to prefer shorter rods. I use 7' ugly stik gx2 medium power. They are 1 piece rods and I got them at Walmart. I have 6 of them set up with okuma line counter reels, 14lb test, and I use them for spring brown fishing, walleye, and finger lake fishing. Is your kicker tied to the main outboard with the tr1 turning both? If not I wonder if the kicker alone doesn't have enough rudder surface to stay on course in the waves/current. I use a minn kota terrova with ipilot on smaller lakes for trolling and tried it on Lake O when I first started salmon fishing. Pushed with the main motor, steered with the minn kota. Worked ok on really calm days but wandered a bit when the waves were much over a foot. I added the raymarine to control the main motor and it is my prefered method for fishing on Lake O. I have both set ups on my 18 foot lund. 24v terrova with ipilot and raymarine ev 100 auto for the main motor. I like the terrova for small lakes or at very slow trolling speeds and the ev 100 for salmon fishing. Main motor is a 90hp Mercury with smartcraft tachometer with rpm adjustment. When i bought the boat i installed a 24v terrova with a set of group 31 batteries. Used it on its own for spot lock feature and trolling. As i progressed into fishing lake Ontario more and kings specifically I was using the terrova for steering while pushing with my main motor. the big motor handled the chop better than the electric alone. I might be in the minority on this, but I found that i didnt like dealing with the remote on the terrova for course adjustment. I always have a buddy with me on the big lake and i hated handing off the remote if i was busy with a fish. I just prefer the console mounted control of the raymarine and not having to deploy or bring in a bow mounted motor in choppy waters. One less thing to deal with. I love having the versatility of both systems, but if i was doing it again and could only afford one it would be the raymarine. I dont cast enough anymore to justify needing spot lock and found my personal preference is to use the main motor for trolling. X3 on the wire divers, they just produce. Your 25lb mono with 20lb leader should suffice for your rigger rods. Just make sure you have 500+ft of line on your rigger rods or backing if you run copper or deep leads. I run 900ft behind my coppers and cores and 1000ft of wire for my divers. You will know why when you get an angry king on and that line starts disappearing fast. Stinger, moonshines, and dream weaver are popular spoons. I wouldnt run anything under 4" this time of year.
