  4. Covid has tightened our restrictions...in past I would have grabbed my tool kit, boarded and quite possibly gotten them going again...but now that isn’t an option either... Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  5. A good question, the auxiliary operates for a number of objectives. They are Search and Rescue, Boater Education, Vessel Inspections, Marine Monitoring under the department of homeland security. A boater broken down while that can lead to a rescue is not an emergency. The protocol requires us to first have them obtain a tow from any commercially available source. On Cayuga after 5 there is none. Secondarily issue a marine assistance broadcast for a good samaritan on channel 16, done no answer. Thirdly if available utilize a good samaritan in the area. When there is a risk to life and property we get involved, like the sailboat adrift becalmed with broken engine at 10 pm I pulled to harbor, or the broken down boat adrift ahead of a severe inbound thunderstorm we towed in. We work as a federal asset on the lake, there are a limited number in this case we were the only one covering 38 miles of lake. We need to be kept available for emergencies...boat sinking... people missing...medical emergency etc. In this case the second potential good samaritan agreed to assist, with instruction and guidance they completed the tow while we monitored and shut down the entrance of the marina so it would make it safer for them to enter. The two families involved appeared to strike up a friendship and it ended quite well. What I have learned from this post is that most people would render assistance and there are a few that take the approach of its not my problem piss off. I guess that should not surprise me, yet it does. It also disappoints. Hopefully that helps clarify...and hopefully when asked to help, the majority would.... 6. Yes but many boaters are pleasure craft not fishing boats ... I personally have twin 250 hp engines so unless the boat is on fire I’m getting back just fine... your average small family boat isn’t going to have a kicker, and your average sail boat is gonna carry one engine... Yes luck favors the prepared and the educated and experienced truthfully .... but not everyone is and there is never an excuse to refuse in calm conditions to assist a broken down boater with four kids on board as darkness approaches... 12. I appreciate that but it wasnt me I was out on patrol as uscg auxiliary...the boat was a small family boat that needed help...we cant always get authorization to tow and have to rely on passerbys or a marine assistance broadcast which I put out and no one answered...ultimately I found a good samaritan to help tow them while I escorted them back to myers and protected the tow...Im just hoping someone on the board knows the guy ... I am betting he is a local Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  13. To the guy in the Black Starcraft in the area of Ithaca Yacht Club sporting an old style two stroke with a bimini top and oil tank on top of engine..... Who refused to assist a boater broken down with four kids on board because you were “fishing” you sir are despicable.. and Karma is **** Perhaps there is a reason you were fishing alone ... fortunately I found another Good Samaritan .. the Coast Guard Auxiliary is not a tow service and cannot always get clearance to tie up a resource to do it... The rule is you don’t leave a boater stranded .... Unbelievable behavior ...it always comes around Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

  15. Launched an evening charter actually 15th won’t let me change title ...with odd weather of stationary thunderstorms and no sonar to work with due to a networking problem... faced fickle sometimes heavy winds from a cell that meandered north of us enough to mess the lake up for us... don’t often post results from my trips unless it’s something odd or noteworthy.... we finally got into the fish around 7 pm big time landing the boats first double triple... it started with a quad hookup 2nd in two years put two customers captain and mate all on rods boat left to drive itself... lost one on a tangle three on dipsys and one on a rigger... just had time to clear the deck get dipsys going out and one dipsy hits on way out other rigger fires and the planer core fires with a nice rainbow...landed all three ... in total 12 fish were landed on trip but 6 were landed in 20 minutes including the largest at 10.75 pounds and the rainbow.... wild night only running 8 lines..limited out customer first mate had a couple to take home ...here’s to flying blind, dancing the storm, and one wild night ... 16. Last few years have been a learning experience...generally a good one...only two or three negative trips so far out of well a lot... one drunk never allowed back, one psychotic child, also not allowed back that was spin your head around disturbing...they still had a good time...i didn’t..but generally a-lot of people of varying experience levels, like fisherdude says had knowledge came to learn and play with the equipment, which as long as you demonstrate knowledge you can use anything except the rigger with the probe on it...mostly took a-lot of knowledge from the guys here to start..and then read a ton and worked my butt off to get good at the lake...I have to say I dont know what happened prior to 4 seasons back but the fishery on Cayuga is outstanding. 17. Unfortunately until the vast amount of boaters are forced to attend boater safety which everyone has to do phased in over several years .... many guys on the water have no knowledge of what those red and green lights on their boat are even for.... the optimist in me says it will get better the pessimist says probably not... 18. I’m just curious I feel bad if I’m not sending a customer home with 5 plus fish... on Cayuga sometimes it can be hard other days not but I have a habit of giving people more time than they paid for if I don’t feel they have enough... this is not a full time business for me. More for fun and to pay off the toy...I’ve had days this year where weeds and fleas kicked my ass and the line clearing was exhausting but we fought through tried different spots still scored ... but I wonder how much they expect... no one ever complains .. just trying to adjust my expectations to what theirs are.... Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  19. So riddle me this... you charter a boat for you and three buddies to go out and fish.... what are your expectations and what is defined as a “good day”... Let’s say it’s a 4 or 6 hour trip ....truly interested in different perspectives... I have my definition what’s yours ? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

  24. Second time this year I pulled a lamprey up on a fish in Cayuga... First time ever on a Salmon. The lamprey was two feet long ... longer than the fish...had a death grip just behind the gill plate and had eaten clear through the skin in a cylindrical patch. Once removed no way the fish would have survived.... in anger the lamprey was dispatched into multiple pieces with the filet knife...before it released...that said we have reeled in some where between 4-500 fish so far this season two reys only two or so with damage and no rey ...so what dec is doing is working...keep up the good Work... 25. I work the lake regularly as a charter. Regardless if you have a new guy driving or not you are responsible for what your boat does. Particularly on busy weekends it can feel like combat trolling dealing avoiding others. I run 10 lines most days and if you are working a ledge and someone comes along and pinches you into a shallow its a pain...I had more pleasure boaters and jetskis passing within a few yards of my boards at high speed this weekend than ever it was like someone called a stupid boater festival..... if as described an apology is certainly owed... not a cool move Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
