Sold / Closed Kicker/Trolling Motors for Sale
Great_Laker posted a topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
I have three two-stroke tiller motors for sale. All have original service manuals. 1992 15 H.P Evinrude with a long shaft manual start (20”). (Dark blue engine). I upgraded to a new 4-stroke kicker last year so no longer need this one. Motor has rectifier/regulator to charge boat batteries while running and a new prop. Comes with gas tank and new fuel line -----SOLD 1970 9.5 H.P Evinrude with a short shaft (15”) manual start (white and light blue engine). We used this on the back of a 14’ aluminum boat for many years on Seneca Lake but put a new 4-stroke on that boat this year. -----SOLD 1974 6 H.P Johnson with long shaft (20”) manual start (white and tan engine). This engine is like new and was only used a handful of times as a kicker on a Penn Yan in Seneca Lake. ---- SOLD All start and run as they should. I have videos of all of them running this past weekend that I can send along if interested. The files were just too big to upload here. Send me a PM if interested. Pick up in Trumansburg NY Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -
Braid vs wire downrigger cable?
Great_Laker replied to die9895's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Not to my knowledge, the short stops works by electrical current. When the current is broken (with the water) as the wire termination comes out of the water, the cannon shuts off. No stainless wire, no current, short stop doesn't work. You could use the old style switches which are either on/off not auto-up, but you would still need to turn the motor off before the ball smacks the boom end. Scotty downriggers use a switch that turns off when a bead or a swivel runs through it. Some guys like them some don't, but that's one way to run braid with auto-up still functioning -
Braid vs wire downrigger cable?
Great_Laker replied to die9895's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I sold my cannons last year and bought Scotty's specifically to run braid so the auto-up function would work (it wont with newer cannons with braid). I switched because the humming was really bad at times with wire and i wanted to see if there was any difference with electric current on the wire vs no electric current on braid. I didn't see much of a difference in hook-ups but the quiet trolling with braid was well worth the switch. I use the scotty 2200K premium braided line in 250 lb test. Its thick, maybe even thicker than wire and flees don't seem to stick to it. In my opinion, switch to braid if your equipment allows it. Quiet, no wire fray or kinks, better to bounce bottom with for lake trout and its easy to cut and tie without crimps or special terminals. -

I talked to Fran today at Brobiel Marine in Buffalo and he said that he in fact does have a 2021 Yamaha 9.9 with a long shaft and electric start and electric trim. Like i was saying before, he is retiring and closing the shop so his engines are on close out prices plus $150 Yamaha winter rebate. I think he said the long shaft with electric trim and electric start was right around $3k

I purchased a new 8 hp long shaft Yamaha there last week. The owner is retiring and closing the shop for good. He has sold almost everything, I believe the only two motors that remain are a 2021 9.9 hp and a 2015 15 hp both are 15” short shaft and manual start. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Selling my 2015 Mercury 15 hp 4-stroke kicker. Has a 20” shaft and electric start. Also has 12 Amp generator to keep batteries charged while trolling. This engine is like new and runs silent and sips gas. Only reason I’m selling it is to step down to an 8 hp to save transom space and weight. Excellent engine for a kicker or aluminum boat. Asking $2,000, pick up in Ithaca area. -
I decided to step down from a 15 hp Merc to a new 8 hp Yamaha this year. I have only good things to say about the 15 Merc but I felt like it was overkill for my set up and the Yamaha frees up more transom space and weight. I haven't posted it yet, but ill be selling my 2015 Mercury 15 HP with electric start and 20" shaft for $2,000 this spring if any one is interested, send me a message.

With Lowrance products you can use the "Link app" which is free and allows you to screen share to your iPad and you can control the main unit from the iPad which is pretty cool. Allows you to have a second screen without buying another $800 unit. I believe you can only do this with the Ti and HDS units though. I have a Ti and use it all the time. I keep my iPad at the stern sitting on the gunwale shelf of my boat, its not in a waterproof case but it probably should be. They make RAM mounts for tablets that you could install if you want it secured in place. This one is only $30 on amazon.

Here is a recently published peer-reviewed article in North American Journal of Fisheries Management that supports the idea that pouring soda on a fish's (Pike) gills does NOT do anything to stop bleeding. Better to throw them in the cooler if you experience substantial gill bleeding. Published by scientist at Carlton University in Ottawa. They tried mountain dew, coca cola and carbonated lake water, no report on beer, however..... Thought this might be an interesting paper to share. If you don't have access to it, I included the PDF file so you can read the whole article https://afspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/nafm.10571 Carbonated Drinks Article.pdf

I decided to take yesterday off with the temperature swing and it paid off. Bucks were running everywhere, does were moving, just a really fun hunt. This buck came running to the base of my tree from my grunt call at 1 pm. He ran about 45 yards and piled over and another buck came under my tree again and stuck around for a couple minutes sniffing my buck. The rut is here!

Given your great deal of experience on both the Fingers and Lake O, what would your advice be on down sizing the main engine and going without a kicker? I guess outside of looking for a dealer I’m also looking to see if given the parameters of my boat, it’s a good idea to go this route. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Part of me says ‘if it isn’t broken, dont fix it” as everything runs smooth right now but the other side says get more efficient and new as my main engine is a 1986. I don’t have a desire to go over 35 mph and the boat is only rated to a 140 hp (a 1986 2 stroke weight equivalent not a 2020 heavy 4 stroke) so staying small seems like a good idea to me as long as I can get up and move. Looking to purchase a brand new 4-stroke outboard for my boat. Considering a Suzuki or Mercury based on my price range. Currently have a 90 hp two stroke Evinrude and a new 15 hp 4-stroke mercury kicker. I would like to save some transom space and weight on the back of the boat and run a single engine for trolling and cruising. Probably looking for a 70-75 hp. The boat is a 19.5' center console aluminum sea nymph that weighs ~1,100 pounds. The 90 hp pushes the boat 40 mph and is plenty so I figure I can go down a bit in size as i only use the boat to fish and don't need to go fast. The new Mercury and Suzuki engines have a trolling feature which allows you to use them like a trolling motor, but yes, I'm sure they don't sip gas like a 15 hp kicker. I usually only fish with 1 or 2 other people as well so total boat weight is relatively light. I fish Ontario mostly, but the Finger Lakes in early spring and winter. I understand and appreciate the safety of having two engines but I'm thinking brand new engines are about as dependable as a new car (or they should be). Just trying to think out loud here to cover the bases. Any recommendations on engine size or if I'm missing something? Picture of my boat below to give you an idea of what I'm working with. Any recommended dealers in the Rochester to Ithaca area? Price range I might expect?
