I use BoatUS, which is through Geico. Besides replacement and cash value they also have "agreed upon" amount. So I bought a used boat, a 92 two years ago, and what I wanted from my insurance was an amount that would make me whole for what I paid and a few thousand more for the gear I added. Much cheaper than replacement value. Sent from my SM-S727VL using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Great post. Its amazing that a thread starts as a heads up on proper safety gear turns into a comedy about cnn, left wing radicals, the communist party, canadians taking your boat, smart phones vs dumb phones, dropping sh@t, flares burning you, cell phone batteries, etc. Who needs reality tv...its all right here. So if it's the money grab they are in it for then don't break laws, have your required safety gear, and then there is no money to be made. Simple. If they are making so much money like many claim, then there are plenty of boaters not following boating and/or safety rules. That endangers me when I'm out there. I'm glad they're out there checking. Sent from my SM-S727VL using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Unreal. If there is justification for the law, in any form, doing safety checks or boat checks all they need to do is read this thread! Is it that difficult for you to ensure you have the required safety items aboard? You make sure sure you got all your thousands of dollars of fishing gear aboard but you piss and moan about a pack of flares and the fact that someone got a ticket. Ensure the safety of you, crew, loved ones, and quit whining. They are doing their job of ensuring water safety for all of us. Sent from my SM-S727VL using Lake Ontario United mobile app

We've all pushed the edge of what we should do more times than we care to admit. Who here hasn't gone out in weather that you were totally uncomfortable with the entire time out there. But you made it back so you put it aside. Who hasn't driven a car after a few drinks...and got away with it and never hurt anyone. Especially when we were young and dumb. Glass houses. The only difference here is something went horribly wrong, could have happened to any of us. Condolences to both families during a very difficult time. I do own my own land, and pay the taxes on it. I'm also not retired, just thinking of those on a fixed income. I do not begrudge the farmer who needs this money to offset his taxes or low milk prices, its the same motivation to allow a windmill on your property. Many farmers would have already gone under had they not utilized their land in any way they can. I am a canine trapper with many permissions so I talk and spend time with plenty of farmers so I know their struggles. But I've also lost plenty of permissions because of the exclusivety demanded of the leasees. My 5 or 6 coyote sets on that property will "interfere" with their hunting. So yeah, I'm totally self serving in my opposition to leasing. And you're right, its the hype of big racks on Hunting with Bucky TV that drives this. The spike I took on my own property last year tastes fine. Sent from my LGL62VL using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

My perspective was that a forester manages a forest using scientific methods and other methods including logging to benefit the forest. Not brokering for the landowner in procurring a hunting lease at a profit to himself. You asked. Understand that I come from an era where you could knock on a landowners door, engage in small talk and get permission to hunt those same 450 acres. Now you need to lay down what should be a down payment on purchasing that land. With the lack of public land, especially here in WNY, the leases are preventing the average Joe from being able to find a place to hunt his/her 2-3 times per season to try to put some venison in the freezer. And the state wonders why license sales continue to drop. How many retirees can afford $7000 for a chunk of woods to hunt for 6 weeks. Sent from my LGL62VL using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

At 62 years young been fishing since a toddler, most of my years as a flyfishing addict for trout and steelhead and anything I could get on a fly. Over the past 5 years or so I've purchased two boats and spend my time fishing Erie and occasionally Ontario and some smaller lakes trolling for walleye, trout and salmon. But I'd once like to hook up with a large tarpon on a fly ....and would also like to fish the flats in Belize. Someday. Sent from my LGL62VL using Lake Ontario United mobile app
