My 7 year old LOVES fishing, but my 5.5 year old would rather be inside on his tablet, so it took a little convincing to get him to give it a try. I picked them up early from daycare, stopped for drinks and snacks, and he ended up having a lot of fun and wants to do it again. It definitely helped that he caught the first fish (that his older brother helped him unhook and release). He even lipped and released the bass that I caught on a bad cast.
I'm looking for places to take my kids fishing. I know about Conesus Lake and Vitale Park, and I'm wondering how the bank fishing is on Honeoye, especially around Sandy Bottom Park, and Honeoye Creek in that area. Is it worth taking them during the summer? They're ~6 and 7, so their attention spans are pretty short, so having to work hard for the fish is not idea. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I found this reel while on a bike ride today. The rod it was attached to was broken in multiple places. The reel has a bit of road rash and a couple small cracks that I’m attempting to repair. What rod would you put this reel on? I was eyeing a 7’ Ugly Stick for it, but I’m open to other options as well. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
Smallies will usually be in 30-35 FOW on sholes and western points of islands. A drop shot rig with adequate weight works great (I’ve had to go up to nearly a full ounce in strong current areas). Works work really well, and I’ve also had decent luck with Senkos. If using worms, keep the off the bottom or you’ll be catching gobies most of the day. That’s why the drop shot rig works well. A lot do make it over the spillway. I'd imagine many of the ones that can't make it over will spawn in the creek below the spilway, along with the walleye.
Also got to see a bald eagle while there yesterday. When we got there, we were the only ones there. By the time we left, the place was pretty packed, so try to time it so you’re not on top of other people. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
I was down there Monday and didn’t see anything yet. My sister-in-law posted that they saw some Saturday/Sunday. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
Question for those of you that have fished tournaments; I see a lot saying “no frozen fish”. How the heck do you hero your fish from freezing?? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
Reports are saying a couple people fell through in Sodus. My guess is they were flirting with the edge. There was a ton of people out on Conesus at the north end today. South end shows a lot of open water still. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
I just recently moved back “home”, landing near the north end of Conesus Lake. In doing so, I’m trying to find easy access places to take my 2 sons fishing (ages 5 and 6). While browsing Fishbrain, I saw a listing for Livonia Reservoir. Looking at the map it appears to basically be a pond. Does anyone know anything about it, or access to it? Barring that, does anyone have any suggestions for easy access/easily fished small bodies of water that are shore fishable? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
They’re all rainbows? Man I suck at identifying them. The biggest of them had really bright red spots on it which made me think brook. (We didn’t keep any of them)
My dad and I have been fishing Springwater Creek, the inlet to Hemlock lake for the past couple years trying to latch onto a trout, something neither of us have done.
The monkey key is finally off our back after 3 years. I THINK I landed 1 brook and 2 rainbows. Can anyone confirm?
Thanks guys. He's certainly turned into quite the little fisherman.
We took a drive past Canandaigua Lake last weekend and he said to me "boy I really want to go fishing" when he saw it.
I hope he does. I didn't even plan to fish, and only went to help him and allow the other guys to actually fish themselves. Turns out all he wanted to do was run bait to people, and be on the boat, but he did help reel in a couple. He had fun and didn't get bored. That's the important part.
Fortunately for him, we're up there every weekend during the summer. He's crushing the perch on the dock. His birthday is in June, and we're going to get him a bigger pole next year, a step up from his Spiderman pole that he currently uses, so we can fish with own on the boat, rather than using mine.
My oldest (5yo) LOVES fishing, and this summer has gotten to the point where he can bait his own hook (including ripping the worm in half), and removing his own hooks. It's pretty amazing. He's obsessed with fishing, and catching anything and everything, especially bass and pike (he's only seen pike, never caught them). On our yearly 2 week vacation to the river, he asked one of our friends to take him out fishing, and he 'caught' this nice smallie. He also helped reel in a beautiful 6lb smallie.
The dock at Frink Park in Clayton is a good spot, as well. Pretty deep water and you can often times fine some smaller smallies.
Worms and just about any dock will get you perch and panfish until you're sick of catching them. Try a drop shot rig to keep the worm off the bottom and away from the gobies.
