    i'm with Richard on this one. I think you have a loose connection somewhere. it only gives you a major problem when a heavy load is put on the system. I've had cars where everything worked ok. but hit the starter and everything goes dim and the engine doesn't turn. it was either a corroded or loose connection at the battery. check all connections for loose or corrosion.

    haven't salmon fished for some time but the hottest color for us was silver belly with lime green back. another color that worked good for us was a silver belly with a metallic blue back. both of these were our meat and potatoes for catching salmon.

    I would say your about 100.00 to high on a used big jon rigger. but again it depends on the market. but that looks like a caption pak rigger. just one opinion.

    I use 13# pancake weights with my big jon pro tournament riggers. I do kick the breaker out sometimes on one rigger. just reset and bring the weight on in.

    I wont be using the traxstech until next yr. but from observations of them I like that they adjust below vertical and has 17 adjustments so they can be as little or as much as you want to keep your diver rods apart. the cannon is one hand operation. just grad the holder and squeeze the release to put them down. then just grab the rod and lift to ratchet them up. I have both the single and double axis and like the single axis the best. the double axis has a square base and adjusts from pin hole to the next pin hole. the single axis has an oval base and can be adjusted as little as 1/16 or up to 70 degrees left and right. just off hand I think the traxstech will serve my purpose better if I can get use to using both hands to put the holder down. the ideal holder would be one hand to set the holder with the 17 adjustments of the traxstech. and I would want the oval base that traxstech and cannon single axis has. im probably going to use 2 traxstech holders to start with. then if I can get use to using both hands to lower it i'll replace my cannon with the traxstech.

    it does my heart good to read stories like yours. more young'uns should be introduced to the outdoors. he is making memories that you and him can share for the rest of your life.

    for walleye fishing the chamberlain is the only way to go. it has 2 adjustments 1 for rod tension which you can set tight 1 for lure tension which you can set light enough that a small white perch will trip the diver. you might think with it set so light you would miss hook ups but thats just not the case. the release is a lot like a blacks but has the extra adjustment for lure tension. you can check them out at downriggerrelease.com or do a search for videos on your computer.

    I was trolling erie one trip. saw this large sail boat off to my right. the direction he was going it looked like we might get close. so I adjusted course to my right. everyrhing looked good. I looked back a few minutes later and the sail boat had went to his left which put us back on a collision course. so I turned back to my left putting me on course to be gone when he got there. a few minutes passed and I looked again. now he was bearing down on me and closing fast. it didnt matter which way I turned he adjusted course towards my boat. when he finely got to me we had to use our hands and push off on the side of his boat. I have never even come close to hitting a sail boat before or after. it didnt matter which way I tried to go he ended up almost sinking us. what else could I have done except maybe pulling rods and turning around and going back the way we came.

    the only ones I know of that has a below vertical setting is the traxstech ratcheting holder. it has 17 positions up and down. I have the cannon on my boat and love the one hand operation. I just bought one of the traxstech holders. going to see which ones I like beat.

    any boat you buy needs to be water tested. DONT BUY IN COLD WEATHER. I bought my last boat in cold weather and wasnt able to put it on the water. big mistake. it sounded good on the trailer. but ended up buying a new motor. I have a 21' cobia open bow and its great on erie. but I wish it was an outboard. you can fish later and earlier in the yr with an outboard. you can boat all yr with an outboard. I/o has to be above freezing to use it.

    don't know how far you are willing to travel. but you might call karrens shop in Geneva ohio. she has a shop in the back of a house. her stock is dedicated to the walleye fisherman. I have bought everything from planer boards to seaguar fluro leader. check it out.

    I use 13# pancake weights for fishing up to 65' on erie for eyes. get very little blow back.

    try setting your drags a little looser. and don't try to rush fish in. just remember the closer the fish is to the boat the less forgiving your line is, set drag accordingly.

    never seen the need for glue with a double uni knot.

    I use uni to uni. I use to use a blood knot but then I tried the uni to uni and I like it much better.

    no the double axis to adjust the left and right you can onlu adjust from one pin hole to the next pin hole. on the single axis you can make adjustments as little as 1/16 or as much as 35 degrees in either direction. just loosen the holder put the holder where you want and tighten down. sometimes when running divers its nice to be able to make a small adjustment. with the duel axis you have no choice but to go all the way to the next pin hole.

    if you have to buy new be sure and check out amazon.com for prices. I have both duel axis and single axis. I like the single axis the best.

    im another chamberlain release stacker guy. it just clips on the cable and locks down then when it bumps the pulley it releases and drops down the cable.

    for just holders i have my tracks mounted with ss screws and they are very solid. i lifted my 220#'s off the ground and bounced a few times on the end of a couple of holders. but for riggers i still wouldn't trust them without backing plates or at least using fender washers as backing and bolt all the way through the gunnel. its better to be safe than sorry.

    a hand held has very limited range. i wouldn't recommend any hand held for lake erie.
