    In 50 years of fishing LO, 17 of those years chartering, I have never seen a bite like this mornings in Sandy. Set up in 100 feet, thermocline was down 40. 3 riggers down 50, 40, and 30. Two rods start screaming. Had 6 in the cooler at 5:40 (just my brother and I) Released a bunch of fish and was back in the dock at 7:00. All mature kings except one shaker and a steelhead. Not sure it made much difference but the moonshine carbon 14 in hulk and rv along with the rv crab apple and stingray blackhead were great. 300 coppers and dipsys at 80 to 100. Three mph seemed to be the best speed but hooked fish at 1.5 mph while fighting other fish.

    Personally I’d rather catch a bunch of fish rather than a few big ones. That said, everyone fishes for different reasons. The biomass of bait fish certainly affects the size of the kings but the number of years the salmon spends in the lake is the biggest factor. Those 40+ pound fish were 5 year olds. If we want those big fish, the workers at the hatchery need to take eggs and sperm from the biggest fish and mix them. Or better yet, get some eggs from some Pacific fish that are 5 or 6 year old spawners. The Kenai River has lost its huge fish because for 50 years they have taken the biggest (oldest spawning) fish out before they can spawn. This has been a great conversation with everyone being respectful. Part of what makes this site great. Hope everyone has a great season.

    I didn’t know they had lampreys in Mexico, they probably slither right through the border wall. Fished Oswego on Saturday, probably caught a dozen kings, no eels. Caught a laker with a tag in it’s back, called the number on the tag and are waiting for a callback.

    These are all small lampreys, must have come out of their larval stage recently. I would have thought if they resumed treatment in 2022, these would’ve been killed. I have fished the lake for 49 years and the only other time I have seen them like this is when we fished the bubble off the oil plant in Oswego for browns in the late 70’s.

    Look for the salmon in 50 to 200 feet of water. Glow in the morning UV when the sun gets high.

    I think that there was a lot that did not get done in 2020 because of Covid, look at the poor numbers of 3 year olds last year.

    It sounds like the fishing has been great along the whole South shore. We have fished out of Oswego 4 times now and it has been great. The only down side has been the number of lampreys on the fish. About 1 in 6 fish have had eels on them. All the fish carry scars from past encounters. Had a 5 pound brown the other day with 2 on it. Is this happening along the whole South shore or is it a Oswego thing.

    The 3 blade prop seems to be doing fine. Have fished 3 days with 2 planner boards and 3 riggers out and have had no problems. Troll master is working great, love the motor. May try the 4 blade prop when the bank account gets rebuilt. Thanks for all the advice.

    We fish fast in the Spring, 3 plus mph for salmon. So we fish straight spoons at these speeds. We will start with the ff once the thermocline sets up. Does not mean the ff won’t work early.

    Thanks for the info. I have a 19 foot Lowe and am replacing a 2006 Johnson 8 hp that was belt driven it was loud and vibrated like crazy. We are planning to fish on Sunday or Monday so we will see how the new motor pushes the boat.

    Just bought a Suzuki 9.9 for trolling. It came with the standard 3 blade prop. I see a lot of guys have the four blade props on their trolling motors. What is the advantage of these props for trolling?

    They run those thin fins in Michigan a lot for coho in reds and oranges. Thanks for the report, great day.

    I run 10 foot medium heavy rods with twilly tips for my high divers and 8 foot medium heavy rods with twilly tips on my low divers.

    This winter I decided I would try and learn to be a better flasher/fly fisherman, there is some great content on YouTube and I have noticed the Michigan guys rig their dreamweaver flies backwards ( the skinny way) This must give the fly a much skinnier profile. Has anyone tried to run attomik or minion flies backwards? Has anyone had any success doing this.
