Slower day for us today, but weather was weird, strong storm came through and rushed us off the water 930am in high seas and mixed things up pretty good for the evening bite. Still managed to get 3 mature kings, best was 22lb for the nightcap. Several teen lb kings, multiple 10 lb steelhead, and many skippers in the evening. Got a double on rigger slider which was a first for me — small king and steelhead on same line, two spoons. The Long line 300 weighted steel was best when the lake flattened out for the afternoon/evening. Silver streak Chilly Willy took 2 big steelhead and several 2/3 year old kings. Wire Divers were dead. Quite a few skippers on spoon rigger. Big 22 came on rigger 10 inch Mountain Dew spin doc with lucky sevens Bering strip. Hopefully tomorrow will be more stable weather! Releasing fish
ErieBuck replied to Captain Mr. Mike's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I didn’t even bring a cooler for my trip this week and have been trying to catch and release all fish alive…. Somebody on here posted the technique of hooking the fish with a lip grabber and towing behind the boat with a paracord, 10ft or so, in the motor wash until the fish revives…. Guess what,,,, it works incredibly. Thank you for this tip!!! Caught several 20lb+ salmon, netted, Posed for pictures, etc, hooked up to lip grabber then towed behind the boat for 5 min or so. Fish starts swimming on its own after a few minutes and you can tell when it’s ready. Pull in, Unhook, and it swims down to the abyss! I Don’t like to kill unless I eat! Works extremely well with Kings. Steelhead are a little more difficult but still works Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

Awesome morning!! Found some bait in upper 300s low 400s. And it just kept producing. Mostly a spoon bite but got a 22lb on wire meat rig to finish the morning. Lots of big steelhead out there. Some entertaining acrobatics on the rigger bites!! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

my new favorite spoon! steelhead love it all day too -
I was fishing near the Canadian border on lake erie yesterday. A US Customs boat rolled up on us like we were criminals. They asked if we had crossed into Canada, looked the boat up and down and then took off.

Sorry man, that sucks! At least you didn't have a probe on. I now use snubbers and switched to this 1mm, 49 strand wire and haven't had a problem since: https://www.ebay.com/itm/323970070042?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649. 216lb test (vs. cannon 150lb), doesn't kink, and still fits through the Cannon terminators, not perfectly but it goes through. Awesome cable. This was the only stuff I could find at the time that was stronger and close in diameter to the cannon wire. Takes about 2-3 weeks to arrive from Australia.

How would you guys rate the season now? Seems like some better reports coming out… if this weather stabilizes in the next week or so like it’s supposed to, this could set up real nice Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Good advice! I've caught several 20lb Kings but not any monsters. I feel the runs that the 20lbers went on were decent but not screamers where I couldn't stop them. I would imagine that the heavy in line planer boards should slow them down a bit. maybe I'll switch to 50lb backing to give me a little extra.
-
I have a 200 weighted steel setup on a cold water 453 and using 65lb braid it only left me with about 450ft of backer... is that enough for King fishing? Another 50ft or so will be out to get the board away from the boat. I plan to run the rig on offshore in-line planer boards, either the standard size or bigger size (haven't experimented yet). Just concerned about the weight of that board and a big King it might spool me or leave me with limited leverage with an empty spool -- although the weight of the board might slow him down the more I think about it!
-
@A-Lure-A according to my calculations -- 300 yds of 65lb will leave your real about 85% full with the leader. If you add 100 ft of backer (i used 20lb mono in the calc), that should come out to full. I use the reel fill calculator which works most of the time

For you guys using heavy braid with slide divers have you ever had a big silver fish break you off due to the impact of the strike? Don't think they can be run with a snubber? I set mine up with braid backer, but then a 100ft section of 30lb mono to the bead, then fluorocarbon. The mono serves the purpose of absorbing impact from the strike supposedly?

What kind of braid? Certain brands tend to be pretty slick… try kast king. I’ve noticed it’s not as slick and a good value Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
