Another Saltist will have to wait until next winter ! I got to the Niagara show for first time and got the Reel in which I had to use the $25 dollar fish usa coupon for the wire rod plus feed my spoon fedish !! Being close to needing knee replacement I can’t beg anymore .As far as backing on 40 saltist it has 120’ more capacity of 40 lb braid than Tekota 600 so I am going to put on 110’ of 17lb triline on tight and put 1000’ wire and it should fill it maybe even trim some .Thank you for the advice I apreciate it .Good to see ice melting on satelite images . Counting the days to loc derby.
Hi Guys sorry to be so needy but I picked up a Diawa Saltist 40 and have bloodrun 65 lb braid for backing but I’m not sure how much to put on to properly fill reel and only want to do it once . I am putting 1000’ of Torpedo 7 strand over braid . Thank you for help.
Thanks guys l have not gotten to roller rod level yet but maybe some day , also I’m not quick enough to snatch up an older Tekota 700 missed a couple in last 4 months !
I think I’m going to pick up Saltist 40 seriesLC at show if one is available . Really appreciate your input from you guys who do it daily . Thank you
Big thanks from a small boat guy! Last year I was sweating bullets running a 3rd wire diver (fearing expensive tangle )after no issuses using 1 and 3 settings on 124mm divers on calm waters, the results some days makes me want a 4th . Also a perfect excuse to sample a Saltist if she asks 🤣
Thank you guys for reponses , I have okuma 303s and 2 tekotas , and lots of older reels I need one more reel for WD and heard lots of good things about Saltists wasn’t sure if they were used on wire divers .I am far from having matched gear so thought trying a Saltist couldn’t hurt anything. Appreciate the help.
Good morning ,
I have a shimano tekota 600lc which holds 1000’ of wire and wanted to try a Diawa saltist, does their 30 series fit 1000 feet of wire or do I need to go to size 40 ?
Also are their any vendors at Niagara show with reel specials ? Thank you for any input
Thank you for posting report Matt, great detail very helpful for rec anglers trying to improve and find a starting point when we do get to The Great Lake O.
Started motors and changed oil and fuel separator filter in 20-30 mph winds yesterday , Good times! First weekend it didn’t rain in months it seems , can’t wait to come up to Ontario in May .Good to see south shore reports starting up.
Good luck and give us your report, I hope to retire pretty soon and keep boat at Oak Orchard dry docked along with small trailer if anyone knows of such a place I would appreciate the info .
Took a charter last year out of Olcott last 4th , 4 of us had limit by 10:30 ,I was kind of bummed it ended so quick . I guess I wanted to learn more.1 brown the rest kings up to 19 lbs.Staight out front 200-240’ of water .
Hi ,I thought you would get some response after so many with more experience than me read your post but I was in the same shoes as you I had Lowerace x70a i loved simple to construct digital intrument box to read surface spd /temp
easy to zoom /set alarms ext.
I ended up with different boat and started fresh with everything at christmas time I went with lowerance hds7 live and it is a nice unit but quite a bit more advanced than what I had .I only get on water big enough to really play with maybe 2 times a year (were i live boat is always in a state of turning bc lakes tiny) That said its has a million features I will probably never use .The factory cmap gps is not to my liking and requires a $150 upgrage to navionics chip .loading and marking waypoints is easy but watching little boat on screen to get back to waypoint is terrible , a simple compass heading and distance to waypoint is better in my old eyes . Maybe I’m to stupid to get the machine there not sure but I use my handheld garmin gps to run back to port with when on lake o its just easier .side scan , down scan cook for looking for bait machine is very crisp and powerful but I’m usually the guy setting lines ,netting and just dont have much screen time . Many different ways to do things touch screen long touches , buttons , color palletes.I guess lucky I’m catching instead of playing with graph . My advice would be to reach out to capt Rich Heyjecki from crazy yankee sportfishing he lives it and works for I believe krauser marine . They have booth at Niagara fishing expo , but He is a nice guy and answered sime questions for me a few years ago . All electronics are techy today I think he sells several brands and knows what units and price points would serve you well . I hope to learn mine need more time in boat instead of work , a lot of words about nothing but good luck . Ps the guys at my bass pro shop were useless
X2 on Chainberlains
like a modified blacks with magnet weight adjustability and separate rod break out tension , I use for dinks in my state to kings on Ontario, they also make a stacker version very well designed units.
Thank you all of the advice ,I live in state of no big lakes to test any big water techniques.I will set sights on fh td for next season and log depths of 124 mm deeper divers and copper .Flashers always intimidated me after a few nasty tangles running off riggers I’m sure it was inexperience and crabbing in small boat currents bad driving or all of the above .Running Flasher off mag board on 400 C seemed like safe alternative for me and never ran 8-10” spindoctors before seems like everyone loves them .I didn’t know if they dig deeper spinning or rise slightly due to action an materials there made out of . I made screen shot of dive chart , I appreciate all of your help .
thx Glenn
