  1. This is definitely a terrible thing to happen to anyone. As a longtime member of BoatUS I pay attention to their reports of insurance claims related to unattended sinkings while moored. A large number incidents are due to poor or improper maintenance of key onboard systems that allow the ingress of water. Since we do not know what exactly the root cause of this incident and likely never will unless the actual owner makes post here or elsewhere…let’s reinforce the preventative maintenance concepts BoatUS advocates in order to help our friends and neighbors avoid this kind catastrophe. Regularly inspect all through-hull hose connections for security and serviceability, use stainless steel clamps and double clamp a necessary; keep bilge clean and clear of debris that could foul bilge pump(s), and check bugle pumps and automatic switches for proper operation before leaving vessel unattended for any extended period of time. Check battery health/shore power connections. Have a back up plan to have someone check your vessel after significant weather events. I watched a great video from Capt Rich Hajecki regarding his fitting out of the latest Yankee Troller (Tiara) in which he installed a cellular-based vessel monitoring system and phone app that alerts you if/when something goes south. I said a prayer for this boat owner(s)and pray all turn out well for them.
  2. Yep really informative.
  3. Yes….from Capt Rich Hajecki (Yankee Troller) YouTube posts: https://upstatefreshwater.org/NRT-Data/Lake-Ontario-Data/lake-ontario-data.html
  4. Great post and nice fish!!! I dream about about having an average day like yours🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
  5. Did you stay in the bay or go out to deep water?
  6. No problem and thank you. I assumed they were probably already sold.
  7. Great discussion and while I have not fished LO as yet (my refitting project is running longer than planned😫😫), I grew up on one of the world premier Rainbow streams in the US…Catherine Creek (a major Seneca Lake tributary) during the 50s, 60s, and 70s. In those days the spring Rainbow spawn was a thing of absolute beauty. You could not navigate Rt 14 between Horseheads and Watkins during the first week of April let alone find a parking spot. The early versions of food trucks dotted every few miles and the fishing was world class. Then on June 18, 1972 Mother Nature delivered a life and fishery altering blow known as Hurricane Agnes the Southern Tier Region of New York and neighboring Pennsylvania experienced a rain and flood event not seen in modern history of the region. Catherine Creek’s natural habitat was permanently altered by both the flooding and the subsequent flood control efforts by NYS to modify the creek’s banks and channel. Gone were those wonderful pools with deep eddies and overhanging tree roots that provide great hidey holes for those big trout. Yes the spring run still occurs but nothing like in the days of my youth. Seneca Lake has too gone through some tectonic shift in its own ecological habitat. I am not a marine biologist, but things have changed to alter the life cycle of the fishery. Gone are the big schools of smelt and saw bellies that the salmon and trout foraged on…the invasion of the zebra mussels and introduction of other invasive (fleas) have created demonstrative impact to both the quantity and size of the fish. That said, I not sure what if anything can be done to restore or replace the fisheries without everyone first coming to a common understanding of the status quo. Similarly, I think it’s the same situation with LO. The big dilemma is as it usually is: quality versus quantity. In fishing terms bigger fish vs smaller more plentiful fish. Recreational sport fishing is a business and the market forces that drive that economy and experience will tend to dictate the equilibrium.
  8. We have a refund program in Virginia that you scan your receipt and certify that the gas was purchased at a traditional gas station versus Marina and you used it for boating or lawn tractor…non motor vehicle use. They send a refund of fuel taxes related to road use. You are required to maintain paper records for 5 years. The price delta between gas station and marina in my area for non-ethanol gas is between $1.25 and $2.00 per gas, but most lake area gas stations price their non-ethanol gas just below marina prices. So you then have to figure the travel cost in terms of time shopping for lowest price. I use the refund process because I use more gas mowing and weed eating 2 acres of lawn than I do boating/fishing.
  9. Here is a good article on LO currents. https://trca.ca/conservation/watershed-management/lake-ontario-waterfront/projects/western-durham-nearshore-monitoring-program/currents/
  10. This same knucklehead tried to rip me off last fall when I posted a wanted/iso for a thermo-troll 840 foul weather cover. I figured he was a troll as I always check out posters creds or reputation stats…this jerk joined LOU the same day I posted my ad…reported him straight to LOU. I never did get any response from LOU admin team, just assumed (😫😫) they did their thing. Apparently they missed this lamprey.🤬🤬🤬
  11. Dan— I have had great success with Bunky’s Charter Boat Fishing (https://m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100055396102171). They are located at 14448 Solomons Island Rd S, Solomons, MD 20688. My son and I did two charters for trophy season stripers and had great success. Respectfully Scott aka Pair of Jacks
  12. I bought mine based on BoatUS: https://www.boatus.org/study-guide/equipment/vds
  13. Glad is was something inexpensive and simple.
  14. I have been a member of BostUS and all my boats are insured by BoatUS via GIECO since I bought my first boat 45 years ago and I now own 3 boats. I get the unlimited towing from BoatUS Tow. I consider myself a fairly good sailer/boater and marine mechanic and would not go boating without the tow insurance. I had to use it once when I filled up at a marina that had water contaminated gas. We were 8 miles from the dock in my 1995 21’ SeaRay when the engine fouled out. I had 2 non-nautical guests on board…fortunately the weather was good and TowBoatUS was responsive and a great service. They had four other toes that same day…all of us had filled up at the same marina😫😫😫. I would be without it.
  15. LOU colleagues—I want to give a shout-out to FishingSkrip27 (here on LOU)who is starting up a small business making and selling spoon pads. The attached picture gives you a sample of his work and product. I recommend him without reservation.
  16. Another point to be aware of for Mercury 4-stroke outboards is Mercury specifically recommends lower viscosity oil during cold weather operation. I learned the hard way with my 2019 Mercury 25 EFT 4-stroke. I fish year around here on my home port on Lake Anna Virginia and last winter (January 2023) we headed out on a 35 degree day and before we ever left the slip the engine alarmed and shut down. Fortunately the engine shut down before any real damage…took the boat to my dealer…and he fired up the motor inside his maintenance bay (68 degrees) and no issues. Then he checked the oil change history and eureka the oil was the higher viscosity warm weather oil. So I learned a valuable lesson…read the owners manual wrt different operating conditions and different oil viscosity.
  17. Sherman—sorry for the confusion… you stated in your original post,”I have found the dredge weights to work the best with less blowback than all the others I have tried.” So I search google for Dredge weights and found this: https://fishrazr.com/dredge-pulling-kit-in-waterproof-box-with-6lb-fish-weight/ If I now understand your post a dredge weight is just a downrigger weight shaped like a fish…correct?
  18. Sherman—can you clarify how you use dredge weights to reduce blow back…I looked on YouTube and I found a dredge weight but it looks like an over signed Alabama rig you attach to a fish-shaped downrigger weight… I cannot see how this configuration would decrease blowback when it just adds more surface area to the weight.
