cinnamon fish.... thanks soo much for the followup. I belonged to a group nearly 50 years ago, the Finger Lakes Anglers Association, that ran informal season long  biggest fish (LT, RT, etc) contests. The group included a couple guys that some in the FLTA may recall... Wally Allen and Randy Baker. I just enjoy knowing there's a group of great fishermen still pursuing the unique challeges of the Finger Lakes and following the results through their tournament season.

THAT LAKE HAS NOTHING BUT LAKERS IN IT NEAR HARDLY EVER DO YOU GET ANYTHING ELSE TAKE  ALL THOSE LAKERS YOU WANT OUT OF THERE NEED TO BRING THAT LAKE BACK TO ITS HAY DAY

Posted

Trout hunter- Amen to that. I have a place on Keuka. And I am getting real good at the smoker! Not sure this will ever get corrected. I know it takes time. The Cisco experiment has done nothing from my perspective. But, I am fortunate enough to be on it, for that I am thankful.

Posted

THAT LAKE NEEDS A MAJOR STOCKING OF ALEWIFES TO HELP KICK START THAT LAKE & FAST LAKES DOWN IN JERSEY STOCK THEM ALL THE TIME YOU COULD GET NETTERS ON SENECA THAT COULDTHEN TRANSPORT THEM TO KEUKA

Posted

AT THIS POINT THEY ARE NO LONGER CONSIDERED A INVASIVE SPECIES AS THEY HAVE ESTABALISHED A BREEDING POPULATION IN JUST ABOUT ALL THE FINGER LAKES

Posted

Maybe not invasive but there are still disease issues and I know of no known captive population to breed or raise them from would just take to much space that said an aggressive harvest plan to reduce lake trout for a few years might do that lake a lot of Good another option might be to capture quarantine and than release some large Lakers from elsewhere they will happily turn cannabilist which could limit the overpopulation and make a trophy fishery

Posted

You can use them for bait so what is the difference then if they were put in the lake anyway by the state just saying

Posted

I am pretty sure that there are also still lakes that alewives are allowed to be used as bait. Not sure about Keuka, but I am pretty sure that Skaneateles is one. Probably several others. Alewives are not good for a lot of reasons. Disease, toxins that they produce, overtaking native baitfish populations.. etc. I dont know how dec comes up with stocking numbers, but I think the answer could be just as easy as stocking more rainbows, browns, and salmon in some of the smaller lakes. Owasco where I live gets way more lakers than anything and some of the larger Fingerlakes (esp. cayuga) seem to get an exorbitant amount more of silver fish than Owasco and other lakes. if it were up to me, I would just stock more silver fish, and add some walleyes to the mix. Dec really seems to hate walleyes, and I think some of th FLTA members are probably the people who complained about walleyes in owasco.. now they are almost gone.

Posted

I AGREE WITH YOU TO SOME DEGREE THEY WORK TOGETHER IN SOME NOT SO GOOD IN OTHERS HAVE TO FIND THAT HAPPY ZONE I GUESS

Posted

Dec does a ton of walleye stocking around the state typically they try to manage lakes as either warm water or cold water so either trout or walleye and its not because some lakes can't handle both its because resources like hatchery space people and money are not unlimited and government is not efficient with funds realistically there are trout and walleye fishery available within a reasonable drive for everyone in the state including some world class options. They do an excellent job using actual science to make decisions and not just politics and complaining fisherman.  The dec gets a lot of crap that isn't justified and the legal system of new york does not take conservation law seriously enough and despite that the state has multiple destination waters for salmon. Bass trout walleye and muskie for those who like other fish the state has some of the biggest sheepshead and carp on the planet
