Can you connect copper wire directly to the downrigger release?

I’ve done a ton of research on copper wire setups for trolling for Kings. I know a lot of people hook them to in-line planet boards but no one talks about hooking the actual copper to the release. Most go past the copper and set it up on the backing. Can you hook the copper directly to the copper or will that kink it? My guess is no one does it because it kinks.

I would recommend hooking it to the backing and not the copper
