This should be fairly accurate and even if it is off a little there is a lot of stuff going on that shouldn't be.

Two days ago a person was fishing without a license and was detained by a DEC officer in the Pineville area of the Salmon River. Not until things progressed did he identify himself as an Indian who did not need a license and showed the officer his card.

At the end of the encounter the individual supposedly said that the officer had done it now and he would be back with a bunch of people to rape the river.

He held true to his words and last night a large group were spearing and snagging salmon in the lower fly zone. Nothing was done. Today there was a gill net placed in the river by the lighthouse and nothing has been done.

The governor has told the DEC and police to stand down. Both Chris LeGard and Steve Hurst know about this and didn't respond to the situation and requests for correspondence from many concerned fishermen as of this time and with the weekend probably not any time soon.

Anyone concerned about the fishery needs to be proactive about this.

If nothing is done now with Chinooks and Cohos taking a hit maybe they can be encouraged to come back in July when the water is low and the tasty Atlantic salmon are present and easy to spear, snag, and net. Now sets president for then.

I hate to be negative but this is beyond reckless and disrespectful of the fishery and all of us who enjoy it. Those in charge should be moving on this, to do otherwise shows how little they care and collecting a paycheck is all that matters - everything else is lip service.

This is society and America today .

Why not do whatever you want to do? Laws and the Constitution are just pieces of paper that get in the way of that . Break the law and get arrested , no bail and released . We see it everyday on our TV sets . Our enemies test us everyday because they know we are weak and will do nothing . Our own leaders do as they wish with no regard for laws or the people they represent . Monkey see , Monkey do .

And we just sit back and watch it all happen .

Only one leader can save us from all this and turn things around .

this should suprise nobobdy that the socialist, pro criminal democrat governor gave the order not to enforce the law.they do everything they can to keep criminals on the street, instead of behind bars.so ordering the dec to ignore fish poaching is just par for the course.

Au contraire, mon frere. If there was only one leader who could turn this around, we'd be in a heap of trouble. Together, we can all turn this around, regardless of who's at the helm. I believe in people, not demagogues.

On the contrary man

Leadership sets the tone.  Look at any good sports team , great players with lousy leadership don't do well .

Look who is at the helm now .

Nuff said .

Think it’s time for citizens to set the tone. I for one have no interest or expectation that our gelded law enforcement has the reigns to get things done.

This is not about conservation laws   The DEC is hamstrung by treaties with indigenous peoples.  They can fish anywhere, anytime and using whatever methods they choose. These treaties go way back and can’t be overturned without both sides agreeing. And I doubt that the Indians are about to give up

Unfortunately, it is the same old adage of greed and power. This is tied to money. When NYS opened up sports betting, they gave the business to a select few and did not invite indigenous groups to the table. The Scriba Creek walleye spearing incident was just the beginning. The DEC had caught the group of Indigenous people dead to rights. It got a little scary for officers as they were hamstrung by Hochel who told them to stand down to ease tensions still brewing from the sports betting issue. This may end badly if folks think the only recourse is to take matters into their own hands.

I respect and support indigenous people and their rights to fish and hunt. No issue.

This conflict between native Americans exercising their treaty rights and local law enforcement or DEC enforcement repeats itself over and over again. Some Native Americans have a huge chip on their shoulder and they can be quite ornery, leading to unnecessary conflicts. It is beyond me what this has to with democrats or republicans.

As for one "leader" or taking the law in one's own hands. Please let me remind you that you are getting riled up about a dispute between a policeman and a man lawfully exercising his freedom rights.

Most of the old treaties have made their rounds in discovery in recent years. Indigenous people have a right to harvest in this manner. Someone may argue that the Salmon River and Scriba Creek runs are supported by taxpayer dollars and therefore should be excluded from “harvest by any means” indigenous methods but that is a slippery slope.

Maybe they should go ruffle some feathers on the DSR area!!!! This would move this issue right up the chain pretty quickly lol. I love how some people claim that this was their way of life and do it ceremoniously, well even Europeans hunted and fished to feed their families. I have no issues them exercising their rights but come on spearing and netting Pacific salmon in NYS. These fish didn't even exist here until the 1960's some 200YEARS after these treaties.

I received some info from a reliable source. There was an issue on the Salmon with indigenous people fishing at night. They were issued tickets for fishing in a no-kill section but not for the manor of taking.  There were some other fishermen busted fishing at 2am (Russians) as well. My brother was fishing the Catt this morning and had a run in with three centerpinners with Southern accents that told him he had to leave the hole. It seems to me MEN are behaving badly and it doesn’t matter which group they come from.
