Legacy -The 2024 Deer Season-

Recommended Posts

My son keeps asking to go deer hunting……so that’s what we did tonight. Got to see a fox, some geese, and right around 7pm three doe. We picked the biggest one and harvested her. Big thanks to Isaac for letting me hunt over one of his well manicured lush food plots. Great hunt and my son was super stoked. Way to start off the 2024 season!

Interesting read I saw on FB...

"Longspur Tracking and Outfitting"

Our good friend Joe Tenney of Creek Side Deer Recovery in Ohio put this shot chart together with help of several Ohio Trackers a couple years ago. Now please read my words carefully, these pins were from deer that were tracked by a dog. These pins represent the outcome of the track. When you see a green pin that means there was proof of life, a trail cam pic, sighting or jump on track.
The moral of the story? If you make a good bad shot in center mass the dog is going to find that deer! Stay low and stay off the shoulder!
Most of these pins are archery tracks!

Note the beautiful absence of pins just above and behind the shoulder? Those are all the deer that died clean and didn't need to be tracked. Aim there lol.

on the deer that were deemed alive, how do they know where the deer was hit?  Maybe video evidence?

Fisherman21 - not only are you an incredible hunter and fisherman, you have one of the cutest and most enthusiastic kids on the planet. KUDOS to YOU! I'm sure he will grow up to be one hell of a hunter and fisherman, not to mention a good man!

Andre

PS - I "second" Gator on his comment about the lack of need for dogs just above and behind the shoulder!!!

Well, I missed my window of opportunity getting my cameras out in mid August and I finally got them out a couple weeks ago. Up until a couple days ago buck sightings have been very limited. Most of what seeing was young and still in velvet. Well that all changed. Bucks everywhere! Every buck is hard horned! Lots of sparring. Handful of big guys day walking. 4 different camera visits by my #1 in the past 48 hours also.

So, you're going to shoot him in the first couple days...AGAIN? Was it last year you nailed your buck early? There's nothing beats having a big guy patterned, but I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger in the first couple weeks. Every time I've done that, I've missed the excitement of the rut. And then I have to perch fish with Brian lol.

We had a bachelor group of big bucks on camera since mid-August that have dispersed now, so exactly the opposite of what you're seeing. I expect that we will start to see migratory animals soon. Last week they all had velvet hanging, just prior to disappearing.

Deer are loving the clover I planted this year in the backyard.

Same here Whaler...they been hitting it hard this summer.  We planted clover and chicory this year.  They had a party a couple weeks ago in our plot and did not invite us.  Got one nice 10 pt and several other decent 8's that has got us itchin' for opening day.

Well the fishing season is officially over and it's time to change gears to hunting season. I'll be heading to Ohio on Friday to start the season and once again hunting with Southern Ohio Outfitters. I'll be in the woods Saturday through Wednesday. Looking like some cooler weather is in the forecast. Fingers crossed the season starts with a bang!

Well have missed the chat so far! Still have some work to do but got a good bit done today.  Some cameras out. But I got to admit at this point I have my work cut out for me!!  Biggest buck I have on camera is  a mid 30s 9 point.  Need to find me a big one  on one of my permission pieces that I don't have cameras that gets me excited!

T minus 24 hours until I hit the road for the bow opener in Ohio. To say Im looking forward to spending time in the woods is a serious understatement. Ill be there to hunt 5 days total and all the sits are afternoon. For the most part it is the crew from 2023 returning to camp and we had a great time last year. Looks like the weather will be a bit better as they are forecasting a weather pattern similar to what we have had this week. Cooler temps with a chance of rain every day. Last year we saw temps in the damn 80s!!! Lots of bucks on cam there, so we should see a bunch of bucks get arrowed. If my cell signal allows I am hoping to do a play by play on the trip.
