I was going to ask to be Tommy's friend (no benefits, sorry), but I got beat to the punch.

Krystel and I did dinner yesterday with Paul Willey and his wife Tania; as many know, Paul tracks and his dogs Volt and Iggy do a damn good job of it. Some of the stories he shared regarding the misinformation and blatant insistence from guys who called him that they know right where the deer went, or how to run a track, or even where they hit it (which 50% of the time is just dead wrong) is simply astonishing. The degree to which folks will flat out lie to get a tracker is similarly astonishing.

No tracker does it for the money, but some of the interactions he's had with hunters after he's traveled two hours and spent half a day tracking are crazy too. Crazy insulting sometimes. I just don't get it. Arguing with somebody who does this two or even three times a day, trashing their expertise, then calling the next day begging them to come out again cause you couldn't find it grid searching. Hunting during the track. I could go on and on...these aren't all Paul, but he runs with a group of other trackers who share stories. And let me tell you, between you, me and the walls, if you piss one of these guys off, you are not going to find somebody to track for you in the future.

So, at the risk of sounding preachy, respect your tracker. Treat them right. Try to learn something. And don't be, "that guy".

And if you choose wisely in the stand, you will likely never need their help. But if you do, they'll be there.

Great stuff.

One of my lease partners had a buddy up for the weekend. He saw just a couple doe yesterday afternoon but the wind was wrong for the stand he was in. I convinced him and my partner to let me put him in a different stand this morning and he killed his personal best. Nothing better than putting someone on a buck.

"The rut is for rookies"- Chris Brackett

Although we may see some trickle affects here and there, the rut is past us at this point. Bucks are in recovery mode and food is king. Add some snow and the search for food is massive. Time to hunt their bellies! I love this time of year! Sorry for the lack of hunting reports but without a horn tag I have been on the sidelines until now. With the late season is almost here, my hope is to join my kid for some late season hunts as he looks to fill his 2nd buck tag.  Looks as we have a bit of weather coming through after midnight tonight which is supposed to bring some additional snow which should help me do some speed scouting this weekend. I have a plan but of course I would like to confirm it and deer tracks in the snow will let me do that.

On another note.... Heading to Texas  to chase whitetails again next Friday. Needless to say Im am looking forward to that trip. Last year was great so of course my expectations are high.

Thanks to Double D I purchased a new gun this year and Texas will be first time out with it. I have been impressed with it so far. The thing shoots like a dream however now I'm thinking I want a bigger scope on it.

I'm running a 4-16 vortex on my bolt action 6.5  and I love it!   Shot out to 300 the other day with ease.

For a Texas bait hunt? Perhaps some longer shots needed down a sendero.

At one of our spots the field corn was just cut last weekend and I thought the deer would hit it pretty hard. Have a camera on it and it’s been very quiet. Cameras in the woods have been quiet as well. Will be out in the morning in the woods and if my groundblind survives the wind this afternoon will hunt the cornfield tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully put a doe down in the morning.

My wife and I each got one during the past two weeks.....only with our cars. Way too many out here and they are tame like pets and some idiots actually feed them. Sure wish there were more hunters and less posted land. I think the damage will end up about 15 grand to our cars.

I feel your pain Les. Still waiting to get my wife’s Jeep back. Going on a month.

I witnessed chasing yesterday. The second rut cycle is starting to fire up.

There have been a couple of small bucks "sniffing" the last few days but it looked more like "How do you like me now" that the big boys are all butchered

Pretty morning in the woods. Had doe and yearlings around me most of the morning but would have had to have shot through brush and branches.
Lots of pics in the cut corn last night including one possible shooter. Will be in the blind this afternoon.

Always look forward to it. Its not just the deer, but sunsets on the vast ranches, the hilly terrain, zero trespassers on the huge fair chase properties, and the overall lifestyle down there.  The locals are all armed but the salt of the earth.
