Been hunting a public land big 12 all season. This morning get setup on the ground in an area that I know he visits. After 2 hours of sitting I catch some movement and see two deer hauling a$$ my way. One is huge bodied but it’s happening so fast I can’t see horns. Shoulder my gun and yell to try to stop them as I do I hear a freight train coming from behind me and I get pummeled on my back. After getting my head straight and licked to death here comes 2 ladies enjoying the day and letting their 3 dogs run the woods. Mind you I was over 3 miles in and UP. Thank god the dogs were friendly and just wanted to play. After talking to the ladies for a moment one says to me “you’re in a good spot. We just saw some huge deer and found these where they were 3 feet apart”.  My heart sank but glad to know he made it through the year so far.

To cap it off I texted the wife to tell her and let her know I was packing up and will Be heading home and sent her the pics.

her reply “Wait you took pics of her?”

it’s going to be a long ride home

Was it a WMA?  Can’t walk dogs or ride bikes on a WMA.

It actually is. One of the largest in the state. People constantly let their dogs run, ride horses and bike through. There is a main “hiking” trail that goes through the land. It is very common and known by the local DEC but they never bother the folks doing this. It has become “acceptable”.

generally I do not mind it and am quite use to it,

today was just “one of those days”

The way the DEC operates short staffed, they have to investigate an official complaint and usually citations get issued if illegal activity is found. Call it in. There are plenty of places to go hiking. WMA’s are for wildlife and sportsmen

What would happen if I was on that WMA Grouse hunting or Woodcock hunting with my dogs?

You are correct. I never knew these rules as I simply use the WMA’s for

hunting

Prohibited activities on the WMA include:

  • Using motorized vehicles, including but not limited to:
  • all-terrain vehicles (including "side-by-sides")
  • snowmobiles
  • dirt bikes and mopeds
  • motorboats
  • Using mountain bikes or e-bikes
  • Camping without a permit
  • Horseback riding
  • Creating or maintaining any trails not authorized by the Bureau of Wildlife, including but not limited to:
  • Hiking trails
  • Cross-country ski trails
  • Mountain bike or e-bike trails
  • Target shooting
  • Walking dogs or other pets without a leash, except:
  • when doing so for hunting purposes during the authorized dog training period
  • when actively involved in the pursuit of wild game during an open hunting season
