A safe boating course won't stop something like that

Had something similar happen to me a few years back 4th of July .

Fishing bass off the pipeline at Sandy .

Boat hauling a tube  flew by  and missed me by about 15 ft . I saw the gold chain on the laddies neck . They were watching the tube and not looking where they were going .

And don't forget the day Gator cut off that guys dipseys off Sandy a few years ago . 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄

Do you guys remember that awful accident a bunch of years ago when a boat hit the pier of the Genesee River late in the evening?  Alcohol and testosterone was involved and at least one girl died.

I got my card in 88 and recently added it to my NYS drivers license when I renewed. It shows up as a little anchor on the bottom.

do the news laws still allow people 10years old to take the course and drive a boat alone at 10yrs old?

id like to get my 10 and 12 year old kids in a course.

Yes... there were two crashes into the Summerville pier in 2008.  The first occured in June: 3 women were killed around 2 am when a Baja Outlaw hit the pier in excess of 50 mph. The operator (had the boat about a week) was convicted of BWI and 3 counts of Manslaughter 2nd. The second crash happened in ~August (not certain) at approx 11pm, four people injured/survived... alcohol involved. There have been multiple other crashes into that pier at night over the recent years.

Ok. Here is what I was able to find out. Ny parks and recreation marine division Albany has all the rules. I hava an expired six pack license which expired. No good. They agree it doesn’t make sense the course was taken. I also have a boaters safety course from nj. No good. It has to have my ny address on it. Again they agree doesn’t make sense.  The lady was kind enough to enroll my wife and I a course at a cost of 35.00 each and the 10.00 more dollars for the certificate. All agree it’s a money grab by your local government. I was also told that out of state would need a boater safety course from that state. There is a lot of erroneous information out there. Many enforcement agency’s are not familiar with the rules. Parks and recreation is who u want to talk to.

Being a non NY resident from PA I do not need this certificate for now.  I would think that will change not to far in the future. As I read the regulations NY state will recognize other training courses from any state as long as the course is approved by the National Administration of Safe Boating Law Administrators and bares their logo on your certificate. I can appreciate everyone that has been boating their whole lives and feels this training is silly to have now after decades on the water. I'm in the same season of life as many of you. I have a approved safe boating course from 30 years ago. Looking into taking the online course as a refresher. As we rarely get stopped or checked on the water or at the docks and ramps I'd be upset to get a ticket for something so simple. With all the other requirements we need to carry from registration to fishing license to insurance and safety equipment and even the charters that need even more certification, as it's yet another thing to have it seems pretty easy to get  online. 20250115_213053.thumb.jpg.60c9db60b77d8967ced981bec7549d03.jpg

Oh yeah , it will .

It will keep you from getting drunk , getting in your boat at midnight and driving at high speed into the pier .

That course will take care of that .

It will not replace 50 years of experience, But it will help you pick up on new regulations that did not exist until 10 years ago. It will also fine tune your experience and make you aware of little shortcuts that may have crept in your boating behavior.

But you should remember that having been on the water for fifty years makes you ,like me, probably in your late sixties or early seventies and at that age we start forgetting things that we knew all our lives. And that makes taking that course a great refresher that helps sharpen the edges that have become dull with the years

There are many, many more people on the water that don't have anywhere near 50 years on the water like we do. I've seen enough people do stupid and dangerous things on the water. If this is what it takes to be sure everyone has the basic knowledge of the laws and rules, I don't mind taking a few hours out of my time. I took my first boating course when I was about 11 years old. I took my second 15 years ago with my daughter and again last week. The course is free through Boat US. Then just a few bucks to get a certification card.

I’m sure that the COs will be having a field day at the boat launches  I am so in favor of this law. It seems strange that you need a license to operate a vehicle on the road. But anyone , in the past , could operate a vessel without any knowledge of the rules of the road and any safety rules. I have seen it firsthand over the ( many) years on the NY waterways.  Glad they finally made it mandatory to know what you’re doing

Ok , so it's probably time to stop dragging my feet on this .

Anbin person might be fun for the social aspect . Anyone know of one?

Maybe LOU guys could organize one?

And I see a bunch of on line . Any recommendations or personal experiences ?

I also did mine online through Boat US. The Total cost was $13 to get the new license with the anchor sent to me. You can do it at your leisure and at your own pace.

I was told that NYS residents renting a boat do not need the safety course. IMO that’s the boater who needs it the most being unfamiliar with boating rules. Maybe the tourism angle again

I can't find it anywhere that says there is exemptions for anyone, other than charter operators and others who already need a captains license.  Is it my reading that everyone operating a motorized watercraft needs to have the boat safety certificate. The certificate can be issued from some other state or province but all operators must have it, even out of state residents.  Still looking, but maybe someone can point to a legit government source in writing that says otherwise. By the way, my 80 year old mother who's been operating her own boat for 30 years was denied a rental last year cause she didn't have one.

U r very correct. We just took the course with the cg auxiliary yesterday. Found a couple interesting facts I was unaware of. One being if u have an inflatable off on board and your counting it as your pfd it must be on u. They would not recognize my safety course from nj because I now reside in my and it must show my current address. U must have a boaters safety course from the state u reside in to operate a motorized boat in ny. Hope this helps

My Capts license covers me in any state in the country. I read the same thing about the rental boats in NY but never did any further research on it.
