Quick question. My family and I take a trip to Canada for a week each summer. This year, my son was told by a friend that now, anyone who operates a boat in Canada needs to have a boating license to do so. Is this accurate? All I could find online was that you must have "proof of competency" on board. Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken, the rules are phasing in....and don't affect most boaters

until September.

The other curious piece....I got 4 different answers so far....is does that fact Ihave

a Coast Guard License here, override the need to take the test???

We do not have a license in Canada but you need proof of competency that is usually a pleasure craft operators card. This applies to non residents after 45 consecutive days spent in Canada. An equivalent card or license issued by your state will be considered proof of competency.

<<<<< Well I guess that leaves most fisherman out ;)

Yeah, but most NY fishermen aren't going to be in Canada for 45 consecutive days either.

Or did you mean competent boaters :lol::lol:

I guess most sailboaters would not qualify based on the competency clause ;)
