SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

====================

Ontario September 7-14 2009

We arrived in Mexico around 11:30 AM after stopping to get licenses and the necessary tackle. We made quick of setting up camp and getting on the water around 3:00. At 4:30 we landed our first fish of the trip, a nice fat COHO. Although I had bought several NEW flies I had to put down this old standby, a crinkle green with chartreuse beads. That was to be the only fish of the evening. We quit early as we still needed to finish setting up camp and get more tackle. :D

Tuesday we started the day with a nice king by 9:00 and it was to be the only fish of the morning. Talked with Mike (lazycs) and they had several fish in the same area. As we had just got there the night before we had not figured anything out. We were paying our dues.

That evening we returned to the plant and worked hard but could only do one fish.

Wednesday we decided to try something different. We headed for the river and did two that morning. We returned for the evening bite and finished up with four more to make it an even six, a limit for the two of us. Not a bad day.

The East off shore wind started blowing late Tuesday and started push all the cold water out of the front of the river.

When we returned to the front of the river Thursday morning 50 degrees was only 25 feet down. We worked short water and were able to put a 30 lb king on for our 83 year old neighbor we had taken out that lived next door to the camp we rent. (After a 30 minute battle we netted the fish and he declined any more). He was beat. With a tired angler we called it a short morning.

Wind kept us off on Thursday afternoon.

Friday we planned to go out to dinner at night and decided to make it a single trip day. Well, we did not have a release ALL morning and by 11:00 AM were thinking of reconsidering that plan. We stuck it out for a little while longer and shortly after 12:00 noon we popped COHO 55 feet down, then another one, and then doubles within the next hour. We ended the day with a double, a COHO and a king. :clap:

Things were looking up but the wind continued to blow the warm water offshore and when we returned on Saturday morning the water was cold. We had 48 degrees 12 feet down. We had been fishing flasher and flies and were going to switch to spoons and try the optimizer fast troll, but first I decided to run the flasher a bit further back (40-50 feet) and still stay in temp 10-15 feet down. We brought the wire in as close as 35 feet which put the side flashers were real close to the boat. I was not sure this would work but it does work here in the spring.

Well we did OK as we were 4 for 6 by 11:30 when we quit.

Worked the same program on Sunday morning and were 3 for 4 by 9:00 when we got blown off.

A great trip. :clap:
