trolling for musky on chautauqua

i am new at the musky fishing, grew up on lake ontario fishing for trout, salmon and bass

my question is why do people troll with their rod tips so close to the water? and do people use dipsy divers?

Welcome bob13....that is to minumize weeds from fouling your baits.Weeds hang on your rods so you`ll spend more time with your baits in the water.You do have to check once in awhile.It also gives you more room to run out rods.Those floating weeds can be a pain.Even if there is`nt any weeds i still run 2down and 2up rods.As far as dipsys...i`m trying them with nk magnums,just can`t run fast.I`ll be trying them when the water gets cold and fish get slow.

put hooks on your dipsy . i have heard of fish hitting the dipsy no matter what color you make them.
