Well, the ol’ man has gone from an ICU at Strong Hospital to a rehab unit at St. Mary’s in about the last week/week and a half. His brain swelling has gone down TREMENDOUSLY, and this has enabled him to move his right side quite a bit. St. Mary’s is an unbelievable trauma/brain injury hospital. They have done wonders for the city policeman who was shot in the head earlier this year. He is back to living a very good lifestyle given the circumstances. He will be on a very strict rehab schedule Monday-Saturday. Yesterday he was utilizing both of his hands like the doctors instructed him to do. He was squeezing different things in his room to work his hand muscles up again.

He has done some recent things he has done to show us he is back to his usual form. For example, he was seen tossing the bird after my mother and aunt aggravated him; he got mad at my mother and yelled out her name. This was his first word in over a month and a half. When I say aggravated it’s because everyone treats him like he is a baby (standing over him and talking to him like he is non-comprehensive), and I think he is getting sick of it. However, these gestures show he is back!

Rehab is going to kick his butt! He will be going through 3-4 different types of rehab each day. The specialist at St. Mary’s says that a typical patient only stays there for 4 weeks, which we thought was amazingly short. So, time will tell. Just wanted to let you guys know what’s going on.

Rich, You are totally right about the rehab facility at St. Mary's Hospital. They DO work miracles. You mentioned the city cop that got shot. I have had several contacts with Officer DiPonzio and you could not believe how far they have brought him back. It's a long process but there is light at the end of the tunnel from what you have stated. Give him a Christmas hug from all of us on the Wayne County Pro-Am Committee and we look forward to seeing you ALL in July... Great news Rick! St. Mary's is a great place as both my cousin and grandmother were there for a while. Infact my cousin was there after a car accident with a tractor trailor in which his brain had swelled up to a point they need to do surgery on his head to let the swelling down. It was a scary time but we watched him go through a very similar situation as your father went through and he is doing great now. You father seems as if he is on a similar path to recovery and we hope to see him back out there on the water very soon. I know how scary this whole time of uncertainty can be....

By the way, was that you that I saw at the Dane Cook show at Blue Cross?

Yeah I was there. I didn't see you! Why didn't you say something? I was very disappointed with that performance. One hell of a place to go though if you were single. Lol

You're family has been strong through all this. I'm sure it's been a test of everybody's spirit and it's great to hear that you're dad is coming along. Keep the faith bud! -Andy

P.S. I saw a buck just like you're archery buck, only he had his rack busted up the opposite way. If I had any buck tags left I'd a taken him and boiled him down so you would have a matched pair!

Awesome, awesome news! Great update Rick!

lol Ray thats exactly what I was thinking when I read the update - get him a rod and reel handle to hold, grip, reel, etc. That way there will be something in his hand so he can't pinch the nurse. :D

Thanks.....but let him grow! I don't mind that he has half a rack. Shows me how bad azz he was. Not to mention the whole story of it going down to the last day and getting my first half rack is one that will live forever. He will look just fine Euro mounted next to the other 4 I have Euro mounted, my first Robin Hood, and the Arrow that killed my first buck with the bow.

Hey guys, I visited your dad the other day. It took him a minute to recognize me, but he had never seen me with a beard. He couldn't remember the name of my boat, but he knew that we fished for trout and salmon. He incorrectly imagined himself a better fisherman than me - brandishing that classic smirk on his face. That's when I knew that it was just a matter of time before I have to listen to his BS on the marine radio. In talking to your mom and her friend Helene, I was impressed with the progress Rich has made. I asked him if he remembered what Mike Spinelli was famous for - his reply - Fartman! Some things you unfortunately can't forget. They don't call his boat Windbreaker for nothing. Hope this New Year brings the Yankees continuing good news and muchos pescos. Call me if you want to ice fish. The clubs hardwater fishing derby is coming up in about a month.

Steve,

I'd pretend not to recognize you too! Im sure your presence helped him remember some things from the past. Keep in touch over the winter, and we will try to get up and do some ice fishing.

Call for Project Proposals - Great Lakes Basin Fish Habitat Partnership - December 21, 2009

http://greatlakesrestoration.us/?p=230

The Great Lakes Basin Fish Habitat Partnership (Partnership) received funding from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative to complete on-the-ground fish habitat projects. The Partnership recognizes that most work to protect, restore and enhance fish habitat will be done at the local level by local watershed associations, municipalities, tribes, states and nongovernmental organizations. The Partnership will work with organizations to encourage local conservation actions that fit within the Partnership’s Strategic Plan priorities.

Up to $1 million will be available for habitat projects. A “project†is defined as an action that will protect, restore or enhance Great Lakes fish habitat. Project proposals will be compiled, ranked by a subcommittee of the Partnership and submitted to the Partnership’s Steering Committee for review. These funds are available through a portion of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative allocation, so the Service will be responsible for making final funding decisions. Expect final decisions in late spring/early summer 2010.

For questions, please call Pam Dryer, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, at 715-682-6185, ext. 17 or [email protected]
