From the reports I've been reading, not only Ibay but most hard water, I'm beginning to think first ice hot bite is maybe a myth? We usually don't get on the ice until mid january and there's usually 6". Anyone have opinions?

First ice came early. I think this is a bit of an anomoly and not a trend. At least not enough to dispell the notion that first ice is usually hot. I did Honeoye on Friday morning. I had one Walleye iced at first light with 4 other good runs that I missed. One spit the bait when I got to the hole. 2 came off while bringing them in. One cut the line (might have been a pickeral or one of those oddball Honeoye pike I hear about). But all in all, I fished about three hours and had plenty of action in that time......by my standards anyways.
