The new to me boat I got came with downrigger weights I'm not used to. In the past I just used cannonballs. These are like fish shaped, narrow, and have a moveable tail. I assume the tail is to make your rigger veer to the left or right.... Any opinions?

I've come to really prefer torpedo shaped weights. Sounds like what you've got should work similar to torpedoes. Not sure what I think about directional weights, got a pair that have become spares (actually I used em on Saturday come to think about it) seems like the deeper you go the more unpredictable they get in terms of planing & spinning especially in turns.

if they are vinyl coated I think they are fishtracker weights. I ran them exclusivly back in the later 80's & early 90's and have yet to find a 12# wieght that tracks any better( i let them go when I sold my big boat). You can bend the tails slightly to get them to track out from the boat- just make sure you dont get them on the wrong sides
