I know you should use a flourocarbon leader when fishing for salmon. when i buy my flys for the down riggers they come with about 2 1/2-3 foot of line on them. does this count as a flouro leader? or should you still tie a leader on and if so won't that be to much distance between my fly and flasher? i was told that you only want 16''-24'' of line in between the fly and the flasher won't this put me over the 16''-24''. should you just reline the fly with the flouro? and should you use a flouro leader above the flasher? if so how long.

C2C - That's the leader they're talking about for the 16-24" length. (What came with the fly)

Most of the fly's out there that you can buy are tied with flourocarbon already so you would just make it the length you want it. Check the package and you will notice this on most.

You don't really need a Flourocarbon leader to the flasher. Regular mono is fine. With the Flasher spinning in circles and the fly jumping around behind, the fish aren't that concerned with the line going to the flasher. Fly manufactureres use thick Flouro leader material because it's stiff and will impart more action to the fly.

I only run flourocarbon leaders to my spoons and plugs for Salmon.

16 to 24 in from flasher to fly will work.

Hope that clears it up for you.
