Lot's of great info in this. Makes the new lifevest law sound pretty darn important.

I went in once when I was about 12. There was still some ice on the lake but I was in a canoe. What they describe is almost exactly what I remember. First you gasp and tend to flounder around, then you start to lose function of your arms and legs because they go numb. I was lucky enough to get back in the canoe and paddle it back in, full of water. My legs were numb but I was fine. Luckily I was only maybe 200 yards from shore.
