Hi, I am still new to fishing with downriggers and have what i am sure is a silly question. I am thinking about getting a Depth Raider speed/temp unit. I know that it needs to be mounted to a downrigger with coated cable. Does this mean you cannot attach rods to that downrigger? Or in other words will i need a seperate downrigger just for the depth raider? Thank you all for all you help, this site has been very informative.

you just want to have your rigger release above the probe so your line doesn't interfere with the speed paddle wheel.

you can use a blacks release also....just put a crimp tube and a bead above the release... crimp the tube snug but not over tight...the bead in between the release and the crimp with keep the release from trying to slip over the crimp...had this set for 10 yr now and never had a problem...
