I've caught them in front of Russell's in the fall casting spoons. First one i caught I was shocked as well. Very hard bottom to them unlike any other fresh water fish I know of.

At first I thought it was a Quill Back... but once I enlarged the picture, you can see it's a gizzard Shad for sure.

The fish in the pic is called a Quillback. They run they creeks to spawn in spring time in the month of may . Great fight and very hard to catch

That is clearly a blue finned round eyed thingamabobby. They spawn 7 times a year and only eat uneaten sandwiches that fishermen throw overboard. That is why they are rare. We hardly throw any food overboard let alone the steak of the sea. PBJ!!! That looks like to me a new record!!!!! :o

Def a Gizzard Shad. Went to school at SUNY Fredonia and I believe spring 06 it happened. We had that VHF virus sweep through and those fish died by the thousands in Dunkirk Harbor. With the West wind I could smell it from school. Those Shad are such a pain in the butt. I fished for steelhead in Dunkirk and just about every cast you would catch one. No joke!
