Had some weather, mechanical and tactical problems in Olcott.

Thursday morning arrival, afternoon fish. Bumpy westerlies kept us inshore. Picked a couple of Kings up, 8-10 lbs., a couple shakers. Inshore by the power plant, 105-120 fow, on bottom or close to it, Moonshine spoons.

Friday morning blown off by 5-7' Northerlies. Afternoon inshore as waves died down. Picked a 17 lb, a 12 lb and a 6 lb. King inshore, along with a few shakers. Same general program as Thursday except black dippy with orange/copper spoon was also gettin' hit. Lost a huge King after a twenty minute fight...pulled out the split ring on the business end of the Moonshine spoon. That one really hurt.

Sat morning was perfect for the offshore run. Got one mile out had an electrical gremlin disguised as a fuel issue. Kudos to the Olcott volunteer firefighters who towed us back in with professionalism. No Boat US operators or private tows available. Boat US dodged a $ bullet on that one I think I will ask them to send a check to the firehouse as a donation.

Jim at The Boat Doctor got my electrical problem straigtened out asap. Put it on the trailer, hauled it to Jim, he chased current for twenty minutes and away we went. Thanks Jim!

Sat. afternoon fished inshore with confidence after Fridays result. Not happening, a couple small kings. Went offshore to 520, 28/29 line. Things got rough quick but caught and released two nice steelies and a kept a 8lb. king before having to turn back inside. All on black dipsy fished 159-180 out, I forget the spoon colors.

Sunday morning made the tactical error of trying inside again. Offshore was rough but would have been possible. Strong southerlies. Caught a small but keeper king and a little brownie. A couple of shakers too.

The offshore bite was the best from what we could gather. Lots of big steelies mixed with occasional juvenile kings or a mature.

Good bait inshore, some good browns were taken in about 60 fow. Temp. on bottom in 120 - 80 fow was 48-52. Fish we cleaned were eating smelt with a healthy smattering of alewives mixed in. We observed plenty of bait tight to the bottom and figured it was the smelt.

We had a great time but could have been more productive offshore with better luck on our side.
