Line for centre pin?

So has anyone ever tried to take the gear out of a regular fly reel and use it as a centre pin? I just tried this with my Okuma Sierra S8/9 and it moves freely! Just wondering what kinda line i should use after the backing.

i use siglon f it is a floating monofiliment line.

I tried McCoy's Ice fishing line over the last year thinking it would shed water/ice better. It did a fair job of it, but I wasn't WOW'd. Another Winter of testing, and then I think it's time for some fresh line.

Sufix makes a cool orange and yellow monofiliment that I heard sells great at Fat Nancy's bought by pinners.

I have used the Suffix Elite in 10lb for the past 3 years, have not had any problems at all. Not a lot of line twist, does not get brittle when it is cold, and is very abrasion resistant. I use the clear, or the yellow versions. Good Luck

I use 8lb p line as a main line. easier than tying seperate shot lines, you can adjust depth easier. its not difficult to see imo. have not had any issues with it.
