Mounting a Transom Transducer

I was told that a transducer should be mounted on the starboard side of the outdrive. Does it make a difference? I am installing a new Humminbird 778HD unit. The previous transducer was on the port side about 16" from the drive. I hate to drill another hole in my hull but I do want optimum performance from the unit.

My current setup is on the port side...didn't know it mattered.

It does not matter what side it is on.Just make sure that there is nothing close to it that makes turbulence which will decrease the quality of the signal.

I was under the impression because of prop rotation, one side is more apt to get turbulance than the other side.

Been a long time I had a transome mount so I could be wrong.

Just something I seem to remember from doing an install years ago on an 18 ft Starcraft.

Depends some on what you have for a boat. IO's and Outboards are less affected because the prop is behind the transducer. The rotation of the prop "spins" air bubbles up towards the transducer if it is mounted on the port side. If you have an inboard boat, with the prop ahead of the transducer, those bubbles could affect the performance of your sonar.

Glen is dead on about the prop rotation. My humminbird 788ci had to be mounted on starboard side as well. i had a mercruiser set up/generation2

I think you will find less turbulance on this side.

Starboard (in nautical terms) = right side. Hint, hint, hint. Either side, just make sure it's slighty below bottom of boat.

Best thing I did was to install a transducer mounting plate. Once it's on , if you change sonars & transducers,no new holes . Bought it at Elams( Captains Cove now). 15 bucks or so. Mine has adjustable mounting screws for transducer.works great.

Does anyone have the duoprop system? will this affect sonar?
