Looks like Erie lost some ice over night. Hopefully it will not be much longer and the iceboom will be removed. On another note, the water temp at the intake at work went from 34 degrees a week ago to 39 degrees. That is located in 50 fow on the bottom off of Rochester. It will not be long now!

The bottom of the lake is 39 degrees all winter, it is the surface that freezes.

Water has a strange phenomon that it expands around 39 degrees and higher or lower. That is why the lakes never freeze solid.

You hear of a lake turnover which occurs when the lake water reaches 39 degrees and the water is the same temperature from top to bottom.

Just wait for an onshore wind and mid 40 degrees water near shore and the fishing season starts as the bait moves onto the beach.

Interesting.... It was 34 degrees at the intake from Jan 3rd until March 14th. Since then it has not gotten below 38 degrees. Anyways, Erie has some ice left but too much left for us trollers.

The Northeast winds over the past couple days blew the ice to the west and open water was seen for several miles today from the Skyway. This resulted in a "warm water upwelling" at the Eastern end of the lake. Very unusual. The ice is moving back today.

A good Southwest blow could pack the ice fields up solid past Port Colborne and it will be a while till warm water flows out of Lake Erie.

At least another week for the ice boom to be removed according to reports yesterday-still estimating 500 sq miles of ice.
