Slider vs fixed cheater

Is there a big advantage of running a fixed cheater instead of a slider ? If so when ?

The big advantage to running a fixed cheater is the ability to duplicate the depth it was running at before you caught a fish on it. Sliders work great when the lake is starting to stratify and you have fish all over the water column. When the fish are in a smaller zone, fixed cheaters are the way to go.

How do you attach your cheater to the main line?

I use a swivel and a rubberband. Clip the swivel to the main line, half hitch the rubberband around the main line and then put the rubberband in the swivel and close it.

What is the advantage over a fixed slider versus stacking on a down rigger? Still trying to learn all I can when it comes to chasing fish!

For one thing, 2 baits with it only counting as one rod. This is very important to the small boat angler who is limited to the number of rods by law. Although stacking rods still has its proponents, stacking rods can result in tangles when most of your "shots" are coming off the ball(deeper rod). Much better to learn with a simpler approach first.

And it is a blast to reel in 2 fish on one rod.

We use a free slider a lot on Lake Erie. Like someone said a double header is a lot of fun. In Erie the bows will run higher with Walleye down deeper. So we often catch a Walleye on the rigger and a Bow free slider. And it's fun the first time you try to net them both at once.
