This was our first time doing the Niagara Pro-Am and it was a blast!! Since we only had 3 of our team members available to fish, didn't have the luxury of pre-fishing on Friday, and since this was our first time fishing the west end of the lake, we decided to fish the Open Division to "get our feet wet" in preparation for going Pro next year provided we have enough team members. The fishing was nothing short of amazing, but our problem was finding the larger class fish.

Saturday:

We headed to the NW out of Olcott at Dark 'O Thirty and ran almost to the border. By a little after 7am we had 5 fish in the boat, but our biggest was only a 12 lb steely, and none of the pro-boats were in sight, so we decided to make a move closer to port to see where others (who had probably pre-fished) were working. It seemed many were in the 200-400 fow range, so we set down over 400 fow and worked SE. Soon after setting lines, we picked up back-to-back 10 lb kings - nicer fish, so we continued to work that area. Ended at 10am going 13 for 16, all kings and steelhead. For day one of the Pro-Am we ended with 63 and change in points, which put us in 7th. Anything in GREEN was working, especially green sushi flies pulled behind green spin docs!!

Sunday:

We decided to target the skinnier water today since the deeper water hadn't produced for us. Headed out at 4:30am and set up over 230 fow. Before I could set the second rod, the first fired with a 10 lb king. We thought we were off to a benner day, but we ended up having a slow pick for the first couple hours with small fish again. By 7:30 we were only 3 for 3 and wondering if we should change the game plan! we happened to notice a pack of boats working an area to our east, so we pulled lines and moved several miles east to the edge of the pack, although most were working deeper once we got there. We set lines and it was GAME ON! At times we had 4 of the 6 rods in the boat with fish, although a majority of them were small. We ended at 10:45 and were 20 for 30+ (we lost track). We finished in 4th in Pro-Am with 60 and change in points. Today they wanted everything in YELLOW, again with the sushi flies in yellow being our top producers pulled behind yellow/silver echips.

We would later learn after talking with those who did find the larger kings, that we should have gone west instead of east of port. Oh well, that's fishing! We still had a blast and can't wait 'til the next tourney, which for our team will be the Atommik Challenge at the end of the month, but for me will be the Oswego Pro-Am. We'll be closer to our home port and will have our full team, so we're fishing Pro. Congrats to the winners this past weekend and good luck to all the teams fishing this coming weekend!!

Thanks Tom! The bad part is that with fishing like that, we got spoiled and fishing back in the Sodus area is going to be hard to match up with that until the BIG kings show up!

We took a trip to the Bar 3 weeks ago right after we had all the east wind So I don't really have anything to compare it to. Our timing was a little off and trying to coordinate a long weekend between 3 guys with a combined total of 8 children was next to impossible so we stuck with our original plan and went up anyway even with the report of dismal fishing. 5 lake trout a 15 lb king one rainbow and a Sheephead! to show for 3 days of fishing. I must say despite the slow fishing we did have a blast! And there is always next year. Hope to make it up your way atleast a couple times this summer maybe in the fall if nothing else. Hey Mark,

On Saturday Destroyah and Jaw Breaker were extremely good, with Man O War and Glitter Mirage also taking fish. Then on Sunday, we started with a whole bait program and the blue glow head was best. Then when we switched over to the sushi program, the Lemon Drop and Glitter Mirage were super hot, with the Jaw Breaker taking a few fish again.

The new Rhys Davis/Familiar Bite strips are great! You guys are going to love 'em!!

i believe its a strip of herring wrapped around the fly under the skirt and fished as usual behind various flashers. adds a little scent to the mix can sometimes help and hinder just depends on the day

They are similar to a regular fly, but also have wire built in to them that holds a piece of cut bait in place. They also contain a treble and a single hook in a slightly different configuration than the tournament tie that is found with your typical flies. They performed extremely well this past weekend!!
