I am brand new to this, and was looking at rods at Gander Mountain today. Planer rods, downrigger rods, dipsey rods.... Is there one style that will be ok for both boards and riggers for a beginner? I can't afford 50 different rods....

FD32, all you need is Eagle Claw or Heartlands in the 8.6' length they will do for you. If you are interested I might have some used Eagle claws that you could start out with at a reasonable price. I need to look them over. Give me a shout if you are interested @ 354-7700

Diawa Heartland 8'6". They are around $30 each. If you run them off of regular plainer boards, they are great. If you run inlines, they are a little light. I have been running Diawa rods for many years and they have been flawless. As a side note, my father used to use the Eagleclaws and threw them all away because he had problems with them breaking.
