I know in NYS it is required to complete a PWC course. I have my Six pack license, does anyone know if this will satisfy the requirement for the PWC course if I was questioned while operating a PWC?

Do you know this for a fact? It seems that holding a USCG Captain's License would supersede the requirements needed to operate a PWC. The PWC course is basically an entry level boaters safety course. Im sure theres nothing taught it the PWC course that is not covered in the rules of the road section of the captains license. Seems ridiculous to go and take a 8 hour entry level course while holding a USCG captains license.

read your license. "steam or motor vessel of not more than XX gross tons"

Someone may correct me but even if you are an average boater who has taken a safety course or a power squadron course, you still have to take the PWC course.

Copied fron NYS regs. Please read the last paragraph.

Personal Watercraft

Mandatory Education Requirements

New York requires that anyone operating a personal

watercraft complete an approved course in boating safety or

otherwise be accompanied, on board, by someone 18 years of

age or older who is the holder of an approved boating safety

certificate. Certificates are required to be carried at all times

when operating the personal watercraft.

An approved course of instruction includes an 8-hour

classroom session and a proctored examination. Certificates

issued by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the U.S. Power

Squadron are acceptable alternative certification under state

law. Previously issued young boater safety certificates, issued

by the State of New York, are also acceptable.

An operator who is the resident of another state or country

and is the holder of a valid boating safety certificate issued

pursuant to the laws of the operator’s resident state or country

is exempt from the NYS certification requirement however they

must have the certificate with them when operating.

The following individuals are exempt from the personal

watercraft educational requirements: both U.S. and Canadian

licensed commercial vessel operators, NYS certified boating

instructors, certified instructors of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary

and the U.S. Power Squadrons, peace/police officers,

fire/rescue personnel and lifeguards acting pursuant to their

assigned duties.

I personally would rather carry the plastic card (NYS Boater Safety certificate) than my USCG credentials while on the PWC. The training certificate or credentials must be carried while operating the PWC.

I stand corrected. Evidently it's been amended since the induction of the pwc safety coarse. At that time we were told by the powers to be that you still had to take the coarse regardless.

I did not know you had to take a PWC coarse.

Is that for everyone?

How about a snowmobile coarse?

Moped coarse?

NY state wants you to take a coarse for everything.

Except paying taxes.
