mercruiser out drive

I am pretty sure i have an alpha one out-drive on my boat.I was woudering if i could replace it with a alpha one generation 2 out drive.I know that i can put an upper and a lower from each together, but if i put an upper and lower generation 2 will it work in place of the alpha one that i have???
