I want to get a fish hawk speed and temp unit. Dose any one know if I need to mount the transducer to my boat if I'm only concerned about down speed and temp?

Thanks

It has to be in the water to pick up the signal from the probe , then it travels by way of a wire to the head unit................its like a large transducer with a pattle wheel for surface speed and temp..........so yes you could but it would be tricky.............my buddy from Mass. that fished the fall run the same time we did had his transducer rigged up on a steel rod that he would lower into the water and lock down some how.........guess things had a way of coming up missing so most every thing on his boat was easy on/off.....

You need the transducer mounted to the back of the boat so the probe has somewhere to send the info to the head unit. Why dont you want to use the surface speed and temp? If you compare the two as you are fishing everyday and if then you have a problem with your probe or you lose the probe you can still fish productivly by using your surface speed.
