I am new, and only have planer boards (for now) As the fish move in for the fall spawn, do boards come back into play like spring? I would guess it has lots to do with water temps?

Yes-

Using them in front of the river- pulling all j-plugs works great for big salmon. The problem is the other 200 boats doing the same thing all within 1/2 mile of eachother.

Man you hit a big nerve with that one. I absolutely hate guys who run their planer boards way out while fishing up by the piers. Almost makes we want to tape a fillet knife to my boat hook and go to work!

What Ive found that works just as well are walleye boards, or yellow birds. My typical "combat trip" strats well before light with 4 downriggers and maybey 2 top lines (Not on boards/birds). Once it gets light enough to see, then I might bring in two of the riggers and put out two birds/boards on each side. I've found it to be easier to real the birds in closer to the boat when other boats get close.

I also run the birds because it really gets the kings mad when the bird comes down and smacks them in the puss......LOL......Good luck
