How to use a wire rod?

The reason I ask this is because it seems like every time I see a reel used for wire, copper etc. There's no line counter so how do you know how far out you are? Example CV55L

You don't need a huge reel for a wire rod, but you do need a line counter. I use Okuma Catalinas 25 size, they hold 1000' of 7 strand 30# nicely.

Copper and lead core is a different story, lead is color coded every 10 yards, copper is a known length. You do need a large reel for the line capacity.

You defintely need a line counter for steel line.

I have a Rapala Magnum II reel - it has a side line counter and works fine with wire.

You can probably order them from one of the fishing stores here and have it shipped.

I would find out which reel you want and call them. Give them the model name and take it from there.

okuma 30s are perfect for 1000' of wire

Yes they are but a just had the clicked break on one that is 4 trips old. My sealines are going on 5 yrs with no problems. I do still like those 30's though

For what it's worth - I've use 4 Rapala Magnum II's all season and they are holding up just fine.

Great reels, drag control is precise. Easily holds 1000' of 7 strand wire - probably could fit another 500'

on if I wanted to.

Just got back from Le Baron.

They had the Rapala RCS Trolling Rod (10'6") and Reel combo on sale for $105.

The RCS reel looks amazing.

Had the same thing happen on a brand new one first trip out. It is those cheap plastic gears. I called the company, they made it good and said they had been having a buch of calls. The replacement they send was brass. Just got a couple sealines for a good price off craigslist. Nice reels.

Bazooka - I'm not sure what the reels cost on their own, but the rod/reel combo was $105.

So I'm guessing reel on it's own probably $80???
