AIS Receiver question.

I am looking for information from anyone that uses AIS receivers with their chartplotters. I fish mainly lower Lk Huron in Michigan and unfortunately most of my best waters are in the shipping lanes. I understand that these receivers will plot the ships on your chartplotter which I conclude would be a great asset when we are trolling out in those lanes to avoid the close calls with them, especially on those foggy days. Although most of the time on clear days it is fairly easy to judge where our paths may cross sometimes it is a bit closer that I would like. Any input would be appreciated.

Hmm, I think I have seen that freighter before on Lake Ontario,from about 10 foot away....
