Penn 310 GTI question

I just acquired 2 Penn 310 GTi reels on Penn Fanthom Master rods. I was wondering if reeling is supposed to engage the brake? I can reel and reel and the spool won't engage. I don't think this is normal but I have never owned Penns. I got these from a family member that used them twice.

Engage the spool and make sure the drag is not all the way backed off.

You have to manually flick the handle forward

Yes, as rolmops said, they don't engage by reeling like some of the other reels do. The 310 GTI is all I've ever used for my rigger rods. I really like them. They are bullet proof!

O ok sweet. I got them free so I wasn't sure if they were broke or they just operated that way. He also gave me 8 northern king spoons, 3 rebel spoons (shaped like a diamond), and a bunch of rapala cranks. He fished mostly on Seneca lake for trout but I plan using them for trout and salmon in April and Walleye in May on Lake Ontario.

The rebel spoons sound like Arrow Heads. They made them for a while. Not sure if they still do or not. I've caught a lot of Kings on them. As a matter of fact, my first ever King came on a black one with purple tape and the bottom painted white.
